A research grant is available at the University of Coimbra on the European Campus of City-Universities (EC2U) project.

Number of grants: one (01)

Type of activity: Perform research tasks in the context of the project activities, namely related to the support to the Energy for Sustainability Initiative of the University of Coimbra in the implementation of a Virtual Institute (IV) related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Namely collaborating in the tasks developed to produce the following deliverables of the EC2U project:

- D1.17: guidelines for governance and policy of EC2U VIs

- D6.2 and D6.6: research seed projects

- D6.3: pre-project research grants

- D6.4 and D6.5: e-learning courses packages

- D6.7: final curriculum design for the Master Degree in SCC

More Information


Financial conditions: The amount of the grant is € 1104,64 corresponding to the monthly compensation stipulated in the FCT table (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en), plus social security (Seguro Social Voluntário, first level contributions) and personal accidents insurance. The payment will be made by bank transfer. This amount will not be increased during the entire period of the grant duration.

Regime: The attribution of the grant does not generate or entitle a relation of a legal-labour nature, it is undertaken in an exclusive dedication regime and the fellow is granted with the Fellow Statute of the University of Coimbra, according to Research Grant Statute, and the Regulation of Research Grants of the University of Coimbra OR the Regulation of Research Grants of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. , both in its actual wording.

Eligibility criteria

Formalization of application: Applications must be formalized, by sending the following mandatory documents: a letter of application; letter of motivation, where the applicant must mention if he / she is available to start the scholarship; curriculum vitae (CV) with a description of the candidate's qualifications, as well as the list of publications and proven knowledge in research and / or development projects; certificate of qualification, including proof of Master's degree and proof of enrolment in doctorate programme; the candidate's declaration of honour on the benefit of other previous scholarships awarded under the current FCT Scholarship Regulation; as well as any other elements or documents considered relevant.

Applicants with academic degrees obtained abroad will be required to present a Certificate of Recognition in accordance with applicable law. This document is mandatory only in the contractualization phase.

Selection process

Selection methods: Curriculum Evaluation (AC) and Interview (E) to the three-best classified in the AC.

Selection and attribution criteria: In the Curriculum Evaluation (AC) the following parameters will be considered:

(i) absolute merit of the Curriculum Vitae (M);

(ii) suitability of the candidate's profile to the work plan (PT);

(iii) additional characteristics (CA), such as the motivation shown for the work

to be carried out and availability to start the scholarship.

In Interview (E) the parameters to be considered are the following:

(i) Communication skills (CC)

(ii) Motivation and Interest for the work (MI).

The classification formula for the positioning of candidates in the Curriculum Evaluation (AC) will be as follows: (0.4·M + 0.4·PT + 0.2·CA). If there are no candidates with a Curriculum Evaluation greater than 60%, the Jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship.

Regarding the classification formula for the positioning of candidates in Interview (E) will be as follows: (0.4·CC + 0.6·MI). The non-appearance in the interview is considered as a withdrawal by the candidate.

The classification formula for the final position will be [0.8·AC + 0.2·E].

Additional comments

Additional information: The evaluation results will be announced within 90 days after the end of the applications submission deadline, by notifying the applicants via email. After the announcement of the results, candidates are considered automatically notified to, if they wish to do so, comment on the results on a preliminary hearing period within 10 days after that date. After this, the selected candidates will have to declare in writing their acceptance. Unless a justification worthy of consideration is presented, if the declaration is not submitted within the referred period, it is considered that the candidate waivers the grant. In case of resignation or withdrawal of the selected candidate, the next candidate with the highest evaluation score will be notified immediately.

Offer Requirements

    Engineering: Master Degree or equivalent


Applicant profile: Master in Energy for Sustainability, Sustainable Energy Systems or related areas. Candidates must be enrolled in a doctoral program in the area of Energetic Sustainability, with proven knowledge of Energy efficiency in buildings and sustainability criteria in the operational phase.

Proven knowledge regarding the use of sustainability assessment tools on university campuses will be valued, as well as in-depth knowledge of requirements and alternatives for assessing the energy performance of university buildings, and in the definition of sustainability criteria in the operational phase of university fields. Preference will be given to candidates with scientific work / publications / articles in the field of work to be developed.

The good knowledge of English language in the scientific area under evaluation will also be valued.
