OFFER DESCRIPTION

The goal of the project is to provide an insight into the functioning of microbiota-gut-brain axis in vivo. The successful applicant will design and develop a novel endomicroscope that combines Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and optogenetics for mapping the morphology and the functionality of the enteric nervous system and microbiota sampling in small animals. This new technology will be used for direct analysis of the gut's neuronal network status in various digestive conditions, and also indirectly used to stimulate the brain response via gut-brain axis. Optical stimulation and monitoring will be co-registered with functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the response of the brain to activation of the gut, and the response of the gut to optogenetically induced changes at the brain level.

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral researcher position to participate in an ERC project “Neuro-GI: In vivo gut-brain optogenetic endomicroscopy for digestive disorders management” financed by European Union.

The project will be conducted in the research group of Dr. Michalina Gora that is hosted by CNRS and ICube Laboratory. The ICube laboratory brings together scientific communities coming from the areas of engineering, computer sciences and medical imaging. It provides access to various platforms with equipment that will be crucial to enable the project: including 3D multimaterial rapid prototyping system, the on site pre-clinical platform with small animal MRI (7 Tesla Bruker Biospec 70/30 USR), fluorescence imaging and histology sectioning, animal anesthesia and monitoring system; 5 optical microscopes and a set of equipment for the development of photonic instrumentation. The team will be working closely with Dr. Laura Harsan who is the expert in optogenetic brain stimulation and fMRI imaging. In addition, Strasbourg offers a uniquely rich environment for translational and clinical research with many infrastructures and institutes that can assure the successful completion of the proposed project, such as institute in minimally invasive surgery IRCAD focused on the development of novel technologies for diagnostic and minimally invasive treatment and Institute of Cellular and Integrative Nurosciences.

Eligibility criteria

We are looking for an enthusiastic and independent candidate that can lead an interdisciplinary project in collaboration with researchers, students, engineers and medical doctors. The candidate must have excellent communication skills, a proven track record in relevant research areas, as well as:
• PhD degree in biomedical engineering, optical engineering, mechanical engineering, optomechatronics, medical robotics, vision, image processing or related fields.
• Strong experimental research background in optical coherence tomography, optogenetics, confocal microscopy, endoscopic imaging, optical imaging systems for biomedical applications, image and signal processing.
• Additional expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired: neuroscience, optical design, optical systems fabrication, image processing, programming, robotics, automatics, 3D mechanical design.
