EU RESEARCH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMMEH2020 / Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
MARIE CURIE GRANT AGREEMENT NUMBER956325
The European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network ASTROTECH brings together 11 beneficiaries and 14 partners belonging to 9 European and Non-EU countries, including the participation of 5 partners from the private sector.
ASTROTECH mission is to create and develop the field of Glial Engineering, providing innovative tools to record, study, and manipulate astrocytes in the healthy and diseased brain. To this goal, the ASTROTECH network gathers all complementary expertise for engineering biomaterials, nanostructured interfaces and optoelectronic devices for stimulation, recording and biosensing of astrocytes, joint to computational approaches to describe and predict neuron-astrocytes interactions.
This will happen by giving 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) exposure to a wide spectrum of expertise: state-of-the-art biomaterials interfaces, electronic, photonic devices will be combined with in depth knowledge on optogenetics, neuroscience, glial physiology and biology and computational methods to validate the developed tools in vitro, ex vivo, in silico and in pathological models of glioma, ischemia, epilepsy and depression.
Crucial for the success of such Programme is the multidisciplinarity and intersectoriality of the network, which will allow the young researchers to genuinely discover and/or feed their attitudes while having an impact on a relevant scientific and technological field.
A rich programme of training activities on complimentary soft skills completes the formation of ESRs. The entire Network has also the mission of disseminate to various audience (scientific community, young people, stakeholders, etc.) the scientific and technological achievements.
The 11 beneficiaries of the ASTROTECH network are: Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IT), Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (ASTROTECH Coordinator, IT), University of Cambridge (UK), The Czech Academy of Sciences (CZ), AMU-Marseille Université (FR), Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (ES), Instituto Nacional de Engenharia Biomédica (PT), Università degli Studi di Bari (IT), Spanish National Research Council (ES), Avanzare srl (ES), Optoceutics ApS (DK).
During the programme, each ESR will undertake 4-5 secondments, each lasting 1-2 months. Most of the ESRs employed by an academic partner will have at least one secondment with an industrial partner.
Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia - IIT (Center for Nano Science and Technology @ Milan) offers 1 Fellowship on “Optoelectronic devices for gene-less, spatially and temporally selective excitation of astrocytes.”
The ESR will be primarily operating at the Center for Nano Science and Technology (CNST) in Milan, in the group of Dr. Maria Rosa Antognazza.
The ESR will develop and optimize light-sensitive, nanostructured actuators for efficient photomodulation of astrocytes activity; he/she will characterize photophysical/photochemical transduction mechanisms and will identify photo-activated biological pathways at the supra-, sub- and cellular level.
Start date: between July 2021 and November 2021.
Duration of contract: contract for 36 months.
Salary: The Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme offers highly competitive and attractive salaries. Gross and net amounts are subject to country-specific deductions as well as individual factors such as family allowance. This will be discussed in detail during the interview.
- University degree in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, Biotechnology (Applicant cannot hold a PhD degree obtained previously);
- Fluency in spoken and written English;
- Willingness to travel around Europe.
Previous experience in electronic devices for biotechnology will be positively evaluated.
- The applicant shall, at the time of recruitment, be in the first four years of his/her research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. (This time is measured from the date of award/diploma of the most recent taught degree, time dedicated to teaching is not considered);
- The applicant must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host institute (Italy) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account;
- The applicant can be of any nationality.
