OFFER DESCRIPTION

The University of Cantabria invites applications for a 2-year Research Associate holding a PhD in human evolution, paleoecology of Quaternary, history, archaeology or related subjects. The aim of the project is to reconstruct the ecological niches at the time late Neanderthals and AMH lived in Southern European Peninsulas to evaluate the human behaviour during the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition.

About SUBSILIENCE PROJECT

SUBSILIENCE is an ERC Consolidator Grant project (ref 818299) funded by the ERC Executive Agency (ERCEA) based at the University of Cantabria (Spain). Principal Investigator is the Assistant Professor, Ana B. Marín-Arroyo, University of Cantabria.

The RA position is advertised within an ERC-Consolidator Grant (ref. 818299) funded by the ERC Executive Agency (ERCEA) on “Subsistence and human resilience to sudden climatic events in Europe during MIS3” (https://www.subsilience.eu/) undertaken by the PI. The main objective of this project is to evaluate the subsistence and resilience of Neanderthals and Anatomically Modern Humans to MIS3 climatic events, in different archaeological sites located in the southern European Peninsulas, dating from Mousterian to Gravettian period.

The RA will be responsible of the work tasks within WP3 related with the estimation of the climatic conditions in the Middle-Upper Paleolithic transition from the available proxies and those obtained along the project; of evaluating the carrying capacity of the different ecosystems along the study period considering the faunal assemblages of the archaeological sites located in Iberia, Italy, Croatia and Serbia; of applying SDMs to the species preserved in the deposits and setting up Agent-Based Models to test the different hypotheses of the project. Facilities for this work are available at the UC. Secondments research stays at other institutions will be needed to achieved during the project.

The RA fellow will join a very dynamic and multidisciplinary team at EvoAdapta Research Group (https://evoadapta.unican.es) and will work closely with other national and international experts in paleoclimate, stable isotope analysis, radiocarbon dating, zooarchaeology and human evolutionary studies.
