Research Group

 

The CEMIC is a research and technology centre that works in the fields of electronic engineering and IT. The CEMIC focuses its efforts on the development of European and national projects, it is proactive in promoting and retaining the loyalty of its industrial partners on R&D projects, it actively pursues policies for the protection of intellectual property, and it has a flexible, multidisciplinary team. There are 51 people working from 4 consolidated research groups by the Generalitat de Catalunya (MIND 2017SGR776, SIC 2017SGR624, SIC-BIO 2017SGR1079 and ISP 2017SGR1721)

The CEMIC covers the entire range of electronic and biomedical engineering and information and communication technologies, combining the study of new materials, technologies, structures, devices and algorithms to obtain new subsystems with more incorporated functionalities. Structure its technological capabilities in the field of:

• Modeling of passive components and functional blocks for electronic, RF and RFID applications

• Development of sensors and biosensors

• Development of biotechnology, bio-electronic systems, in-vivo sensors

• Design of systems and circuits for instrumentation and microsystems based on the integration of electronic and / or optoelectronic sensors and actuators with control circuits and signal processing

• ASICS design

• Intelligent sensing systems, DSS, AI, AUI

• Characterization of advanced materials and devices

• Communications systems, sensor networks, IOT

• Development of firmware and software for specific applications

 

Project: Miniaturized multianalyte SPR detection system for Parkinson disease prognosis

The fast and precise quantification of low concentrations of proteins or other biomarkers has become key in prognosis and diagnosis of the early stages of several diseases. In most cases, the simultaneous detection of multiple proteins is important for an unambiguous diagnostic. This is the case, e.g., in Parkinson’s disease, in which the detection and quantification of various forms of α-synuclein (monomers and oligomers, normal or phosphorylated) in biological samples, using the appropriate antibodies, might be used for diagnosis.

In this context, we propose the design, fabrication and testing of an advanced integrated microsystem for the simultaneous quantification of these proteins, which should contain the microfluidic system, the functionalized channels and the detection system. To avoid physical contact between the analyte and the readout system, optical detection will be preferred. The sensing platform will measure the spectral reflectivity/transmittivity of resonant optical devices, like Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) based on gold layers or Waveguide Grating Couplers (WGC) on totally dielectric structures, which will be functionalized with different molecules, allowing to measure simultaneously different analytes.

The ultimate goal of the project will be miniaturizing the whole system towards achieving a low cost and portable device.

The work will be carried out in jointly with the group Nano BioInorganic Chemistry (https://www.nanobic.eu/) of the Department of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry of UB.

- Excellent writing skills in English

- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary research environment
