Responsibilities

Duties primarily include teaching and research. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Specific Duties

The Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe” performs research to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. The research team includes leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology at Universität Hamburg and DESY.

The specific duties include research at the Institute of Laser Physics and teaching at the University of Hamburg. The research concerns laser experiments at temperatures below 100 mK and the responsible operation of a 3He-4He-dilution refrigerator.

In context of future gravitational-wave observatories, such as the Einstein telescope, the coupling between light and moving cryogenic mirrors and the efficient cooling of seismically decoupled mirrors will be investigated. The tasks include the responsible coordination and research in this area, development of new physics concepts, guidance and supervision of Master students and PhD students, publication of research results, independent acquisition of external funding, and participation in larger research projects (LIGO Scientific Collaboration, Collaborative Research Centers in planning and other projects). Important qualities are organizational skills, ability to lead a team of scientists, skill in solving physical and technical problems, and ability to approach and manage work under time pressure in a professional and solution oriented manner.

Teaching is expected at the level of 4 hours per week.

Requirements

A university degree in a relevant subject plus doctorate. Experience in operations of closed-cycle helium-cryostats. Extensive knowledge in the area of measurement technology and solid state mechanics at low temperatures. Knowledge in the field of control engineering. Very good English and good German language skills.

 

More Details

Salary level EGR. 13 TV-L / 14 TV-L - §28 subsection 3 HmbHG.
Start date as soon as possible, fixed until 31.12.2025 (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).
