OFFER DESCRIPTION

This work will be done in close collaboration with GPM (in Rouen) within the Labex EMC3 framework, where the magnetic proeprteis of these materials will be investigated by Mössbauer spectrometry.

A strong interplay between magnetism and transport properties can exist in chalcogenides as exemplified by giant or colossal magneto-resistance leading to applications in the field of spintronics. Thermoelectric coefficients can also be impacted by magnetism, and a magnetic field applications can modify the Seebeck coefficient, the electrical resistivity and /or the thermal conductivity, the three important quantities to convert heat into electricity. In CRISMAT laboratory, several families of materials have been investigated and interesting results have been obtained in oxides [1] and sulfides [2, 3], with for example an increase of the Seebeck coefficient induced by the presence of disordered spins.
In this PhD project, thermoelectric properties of chalcogenides will be investigated, with a special focus on the interplay between magnetism and thermoelectric coefficients. Among them, the spinel family exhibits very different electronic and magnetic properties which will enable a detailed investigation of the connection between magnetism and transport. These materials will be synthesized as crystals or polycrystals, and their magnetic and transport properties will be measured from 2K to 1000K, in magnetic fields up to 9T.
