Workplace: Dr. Adam Flakus’s team in the Organismal Evolution and Interactions Group at the W. Szafer Institute of Botany Polish Academy of Sciences, Lubicz 46, 31-512 Krakow, Poland.

Research topic: Evolution of fungal symbioses in tropical ecosystems

Characteristics of the research team and job description: The ability of organisms to develop symbiotic relationships is an important driver of the evolution of the major part of the biodiversity known today. A good example of symbioses are lichens, mutualistic interactions of fungi with algae or cyanobacteria, enabled the colonization of a variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats, hardly available to other organisms. To better understand the phenomenon of symbiosis our team studies systematics and evolutionary biology of symbiotic organisms with emphasis on lichen-forming fungi and their associated microbiome. We adopt a multidisciplinary approach in our studies, trying to understand the origin of biodiversity, the evolution of species interactions, such as mutualisms and parasitism, their intimate functional and trophic relationships, as well as metabolic functions and phenotypic plasticity. To achieve these goals, our team combines extensive fieldwork, culture-dependent approaches, high- modern taxonomy, refined microscopy, genetics, and bioinformatics tools. The successful candidate will be included in our ongoing scientific activities focused on lichen symbioses with particular emphasis on their photobionts (green algae, cyanobacteria). Especially will be involved in DNA extraction from environmental samples, sequencing, independent data development and analysis, lichen bionts cultures, morphometrics, light microscopic imaging, preparation of scientific publications drafts and partial reports, organisms identification, active cooperation with the team members, and participation in joint research projects, offering the opportunity of professional development of the candidate.

The application must contain:

  1. Employment application;
  2. Curriculum Vitae;
  3. A copy of a certified master’s diploma;
  4. Personal questionnaire (attached);
  5. Signed consent to the processing of personal data (attached);
  6. List of scientific achievements (publications);
