OFFER DESCRIPTION

We have 2 PhD positions within the ERC Stg 948840-BioCom4SavEn project entitled: Bioinspired Composites Strategies for Saving Energy, that has started in 2021

Project description:

Energy harvesting is a promising approach to improve energy efficiency and meet the rising demand for electricity generation. As such, the energy industry is constantly searching for new materials. What’s more, the growing use of portable and small devices represents a considerable technological challenge for heat dissipation. The EU-funded BioCom4SavEn project will develop a nature-inspired solution. Specifically, it will construct lighter and more efficient thermal insulation. Moreover, it will develop a cooling system based on fibrous membranes that can dissipate heat effectively. The project will also build a mechanically strong and integrated structure with conductive or piezoelectric properties that will include a thermal insulation and cooling system appositely designed for small instruments and smart textiles.

The aims of the project are the following:

  • constructing light and more efficient thermal insulation;
  • developing cooling system based on the fibrous membranes to dissipate effectively heat, both leading to lower power consumption;
  • building mechanically robust and integrated system with conductive or piezoelectric properties, including thermal insulation and cooling system designed together for small devices and smart textiles

Eligibility criteria

Applicants should have an MSc degree in a related discipline, such as physics, polymer chemistry and engineering or materials science.

Skills/Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have a very good understanding in the area of materials science, chemistry and polymers. Research interest in theoretical and experimental aspects in polymeric materials and porous membranes. The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills for regular interaction with other research partners

Key responsibilities include:

1. Polymer fibers characterization using various microscopy and spectroscopy techniques

2. Nanofiber production via electrospinning

3. Theoretical modeling of heat transfer and thermal conductivity

4. Working experience with phase change materials and/or conjugated polymers

5. Attendance in international conferences and meetings

6. Performing high-quality research

7. Writing scientific reports and publications

 

Specific Requirements

1. Fluent in English

2. Detailed CV – including a list of achievements, scientific degrees, publications, technical skills, research experience and other relevant experience

3. Motivation letter with an explanation of why I would like to join the BioCom4SavEn project

4. Contact details of 2 referees

5. Copy of MSc diploma, official confirmation of the obtained degree

6. Transcript of all grades from the last 2 years of MSc studies

7. Availability in September - there will be an additional interview at Doctoral School to be able to take a Ph.D. program at AGH University

8. Signed ‘Consent for the processing of personal data form’
