Group and project information

Project: Detection of persistent and mobile pollutant based on metal oxide sensors.

The project aims at determining how persistent and mobile chemicals (PM) affect humans and their ecosystem. The particular objective of the project is, therefore, to monitor and determine the concentration and type of PM for their use in protecting health and environment, studying the occurrence, fate and toxicity, demonstrate cost-effective monitoring and disposal solutions, and produce best practices and recommendations for a free environment of PM chemicals. To this end, the project adopts a group concept on all pollutants of emerging concern by using wastewater as a mirror of society, reflecting the use of mobile pollutants in consumer products and production.

This project presents a new approach towards the design, development and test of portable electromechanical systems that will include an advanced electronic board based on microcontroller that will control several mechanical and fluidic systems to monitor wasters. The system will include advanced functional material gas sensors. The foundational idea of these sensors relies on the simultaneous occurrence of different physical and chemical changes induced during the interactions of the material with a particular PM contaminant. Consequently, by using different measuring methods controlled by the electromechanical system, e.g., electrical and optical, different responses will be obtained, giving rise to a specific fingerprint for each PM and each particular measuring method.

Skills

- Experience with the fabrication, characterisation and testing of solid state gas and/or liquid sensors

- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary research environment

- Excellent writing skills in English
