OFFER DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a researcher with skills in the mathematical modeling aspects of metabolic engineering, in particular – experience with constraint based stoichiometric genome-scale metabolic modeling and engineering of microorganisms.

Computational Systems Biology Group at the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology, University of Latvia is currently seeking a post-doctoral researcher or researcher with up to 10 years' experience after PhD degree defense at 1-st June 2021 to work on a project funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

We work on mathematical modeling of microbial metabolism by kinetic and stoichiometric modeling approaches and have collaboration with the bioreactor producer JSC Biotehniskais centrs. The new project “Genome scale metabolic modelling linked bioreactor control system” (GenCon) is our collaboration project with bioreactor producer JSC Biotehniskais centrs and focuses on the development of a novel type of bioreactor control system with implemented measurable metabolite consumption/production characteristics as markers of most sustainable metabolic steady states. The metabolic states of organisms of interest will be designed by means of model-based metabolic engineering tools. The designed strains will be ranked by their economic and sustainability features and identifiability of desired steady states. Some of designed strains will be tested at lab scale in bioreactors of the JSC Biotehniskais centrs with advanced control system.

Benefits

The position is available from 1st June 2021 till 31st August 2023 (for 2 years and 3 months). The salary is paid per working hours and depends on the number of working days in a month. The average salary will be between 2650-3050 EUR/month including taxes. The net salary is expected to be within the range 1850-2100 EUR/month.

Additional comments

The project will be carried out in the new campus of the University of Latvia, House of Nature 1.5 km from the center of Riga – capital city of Latvia.

Specific Requirements

A successful candidate should hold PhD degree not longer than ten years until 1-st June 2021 and have experience in genome-scale modeling and optimization of microbial metabolism using genome scale models and computational tools like COBRA Toolbox, Raven, Merlin or similar. Skills in Python and MATLAB programing and in kinetic modeling would be of advantage.

Successful candidate will be able to conduct independent research, transfer knowledge to other project participants, have strong communication skills and scientific paper writing skills. A good command of English is a must.
