PhD in photonics and material science in the science and engineering faculties at the Université Libre de Bruxelles

The thesis project involves the development and study of optical nonlinear films and waveguides for their use in quantum photonics: generation of optical quantum states as well as their manipulation in the frequency degree of freedom.

The project is therefore at the crossroad between photonics and material science. This is reflected by the co-supervision from prof. Stephane Clemmen (Quantum information Laboratory - OPERA) and prof. Simone Napolitano (Laboratory of Polymer and Soft Matter Dynamics).

Benefits

The monthly salary amounts for 2055 euros exempted from taxes. Benefits include mandatory health insurance, laptop, travel to conferences and doctoral schools. The contract is for an initial duration of 1 year to be extended to reach a normal PhD duration of 4 years.

Eligibility criteria

Because of funding regulations, candidates having finished their master more than a year ago won’t be considered. Applications are possible as early as January 2021 and applications will be assessed until the positions is filled (without any hard deadline). The project will take place at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in the physics department of the science faculty. Stéphane Clemmen is affiliated with the OPERA-photonics (engineering faculty) and the Quantum information laboratory (science faculty) that share a large lab dedicated to nonlinear and quantum optics. Simone Napolitano is head of the Laboratory of Polymer and Soft Matter Dynamics (science faculty). Both the science faculty and the engineering school offer regular scientific talks and events, as well as courses and social events dedicated to PhD students.

Skills/Qualifications

At the starting time of the contract, the applicant must hold a master’s degree in physics, physics engineering, photonics engineering or any closely related field.

A good knowledge of physics and a basic knowledge of optics are required. Experience with numerical simulation is a plus. Good knowledge of English and/or French is required.

Responsibilities

- Perform research in an increasingly independent way

- Reporting on the research

- Communication to peers orally at conference and via specialized journal publications

- A limited amount of teaching hours is foreseen (8 full days / year)
