OFFER DESCRIPTION

The Project IsoCAN (Isolation and evolution in oceanic islands: the colonisation of the Canary Islands) funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant 851733) is seeking a technician in archaeobotany to provide support with identification and sorting out of archaeobotanical remains (seeds and fruits). The contract will be full-time (37.5 h per week) for six months from March 1, 2021 to August 31, 2021. An extension for six more months may be considered.

IsoCAN project will explore the first colonisation of the Canary Islands from the beginning of the Common Era to the 15th century AD, which represents the last expansion of the Mediterranean farming package. This project will (1) establish the chronology of the initial colonisation of the Canary Islands; (2) determine the geographic origins and the genetic variability of the human population, domesticates (animals and plants) and parasitic species (insects); (3) define the process of adaptation and resilience of the first settlers; and (4) investigate human impact on landscape and the management of natural resources.

Tasks:

 

  • Support the Principal Investigator and project researchers during research activities including data collection
  • Identification and sorting out of archaeobotanical remains (archaeological seeds and fruits) obtained in archaeological excavations of IsoCAN
  • Photography of archaeobotanical remains using camera and binocular lens
  • Contribute to scientific communication and outreach program including website and social networks of IsoCAN
  • Provide technical and logistical support to the IP and research team in the organization of workshops and scientific meetings

  • Proven experience in archaeobotany and fieldwork archaeology
  • Proven skills in microscopy and photography for archaeobotanical remains
  • Advance user of Photoshop, Helicon Focus, and Excel
  • Knowledge of Flora of the Canary Islands
  • Fluent in English, Spanish and French (oral and written)
  • Service oriented and problem-solving attitude
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a multicultural environment
