OFFER DESCRIPTION

IoTalentum is a European Training Network (ETN) funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA). The MSCA ITN programme offers a highly competitive and attractive salary and working conditions. The overarching objective of IoTalentum is to provide high-level training in the field of next generation IoT (Internet of Things) to a new generation of ESRs. The global research objective of IoTalentum is to develop the next generation of IoT producing coordinated advantages in the area of infrastructures and cybersecurity and use it for the development of any application of next generation of IoT, and, in particular, those of smart grids. That global research objective is divided into three subobjectives:

  • To develop an integral, autonomous and flexible control (assisted by artificial intelligence techniques) for a heterogeneous infrastructure for next generation of IoT based on 5G with an optical backhaul and equipped with the distributed computing and storage resources of the Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) paradigm.
  • To propose new cybersecurity solutions to keep the integrity of the highly-distributed infrastructure of IoTalentum by acting on different layers.
  • To develop smart grids using the infrastructure and the services of the next generation of IoT. To test the breakthroughs on infrastructure and cybersecurity in the smart grids sector. The global and interdisciplinary approach of IoTalentum ensures that their outcomes can be used by other sectors.

IoTalentum will train the recruited ESRs through an outstanding training program that includes coordinated research in different IoT fields. All ESRs will enjoy 10 months secondment in the workplace of other consortium partners (ensuring that each ESR stays at least eight months at industry). Moreover, IoTalentum also offers a continuous educational backbone over the whole duration of the project.

Objective: To develop an architecture for IoT devices in smart homes compliant with IoTalentum access network for efficient communications in smart grids paradigm. To test different IoT devices for energy consumption monitoring and control to support the activation of demand response events, compliant with IoTalentum infrastructure. Integration and testing of IoTalentum infrastructure (particularly the smart-home architecture designed) in DREAM-GO mock-up.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS

The candidates must attain the following conditions:

a) Owning a MSc degree in Computer Engineering, Power and Energy Engineering, or similar areas;

b) Not owning a PhD;

c) Being well motivated to pursue PhD work in the topic of “IoT for smart homes in the context of smart grids” and to submit the respective thesis in order to obtain the PhD degree before the deadline to be defined in the PhD workplan;

d) Being in the first year of career development at the hiring date;

e) Comply with the European Commission’s mobility rule, meaning at the time of recruitment by the host organization, they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the starting employment contract date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

f) To be proficient in English language;

g) Have good programming skills, experience and motivation for the developing of informatic applications.

Preferential profile: Good knowledge about artificial intelligence, Cyber-physical systems, IoT, and Smart Cities.

DURATION

The target duration of the contract is 36 months. The initial period will be 12 month, beginning in April 2021, to be renewed according to the project execution and respective budget.

 

OBJECTIVE AND WORKPLAN

The activities of the workplan include:

- To develop an architecture for IoT devices in smart homes compliant with IoTalentum access network for efficient communications in smart grids paradigm;

- To test different IoT devices for energy consumption monitoring and control to support the activation of demand response events, compliant with IoTalentum infrastructure;

- Integration and testing of IoTalentum infrastructure (particularly the smart-home architecture designed) in DREAM-GO mock-up.

The workplan includes the following tasks:

a) Design and computational implementation of methods, algorithms, and computational applications;

b) Integration and reformulation of existing and developed computational applications;

c) Integration computational applications with physical resources, namely for data acquisition and control;

d) Active participation in meetings with project partners of other research and development activities;

e) Reports and scientific papers preparation;

f) Laboratorial and prototyping activities, including case studies preparation, simulation, and result analysis and presentation;

g) Communication and dissemination activities.

 

APPLICABLE LAW

The hiring process shall comply with the current Portuguese legislation regarding the Research Grant Holder Statute, approved by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18, in its current wording, as well as by the Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt ) and by Regulation of Research Grants of ISEP (https://dre.pt/home/-/dre/134394024/details/maximized ) in its current version.

 

WORKPLACE AND SCIENTIFIC GUIDANCE

The work will be developed in ISEP, Rua Dr. António Bernardino de Almeida, 431, 4200-072 Porto –Portugal, in the facilities normally used for the projects scientifically supervised by Prof. Zita Vale.

 

REMUNERATION

Up to 34800 €/year, plus the mobility allowance of 600€/month.

 

CANDIDATE SELECTION METHOLOGY AND EVALUATION PANEL

The selection method will take into account the following components:

a) Academic Formation (40%): Evaluated from applicant CV (included in the Application Form) and certificates/evidence of merits. The participation of the applicant in European mobility programs (e.g. ERASMUS+) will be positively considered;

b) Professional and/or research experience (30%): Evaluated from applicant CV (included in Application Form), certificates/evidence of merits and (sometimes) face-to-face interview;

c) Languages (10%): Evaluated from applicant CV (included in Application Form), certificates/evidence of merits and (sometimes) face-to-face interview;

d) Letter of motivation (10%): Each applicant has to submit a letter of motivation showing the interest in the project and indicating her/his research interest. The letter of motivation is included in the Application Form;

e) References (10%): Each applicant can indicate two references and submit a letter of support from them. Selection committees can contact references.
