Offer Description

University of Coimbra opens a call for one research fellowship, in the framework of the RECoD project “Towards Realistic Epileptic Seizure Prediction: dealing with long-term concept drifts and data-labeling uncertainty” (reference: PTDC/EEI-EEE/5788/2020), financed by Foundation for Science and Technology, IP with national funds (PIDDAC) via the State Budget, in the following conditions:

Scientific area: Informatics Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

Skills/Qualifications/Admission requirements: Master's Degree in Informatics Engineering or Biomedical Engineering or similar, enrolled in a Ph.D. Course in Informatics Engineering, or in Course not conferring an academic degree, preferably integrated in a pedagogical project at the University of Coimbra.

Article 6, number 5, of the Regulation for Research Grants only allows research grants to undergraduates and masters enrolled in non-awarding degree study cycles who have not completed more than two years of different grant contracts.

“Courses not conferring an academic degree” must be related to the research fellowship’s activity type. “Courses not conferring an academic degree” are the courses referred to in paragraph e) of number 3 of article 4 of Decree-Law no. 74/2006, of 24 March, in the current wording, provided that they are developed in association or cooperation between the higher education institution and one or more R&D units, in accordance with the provisions of paragraph e) of article 3 of the Regulation for Research Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.

Although the recipients must be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to the attribution of an academic degree or in a course not conferring an academic degree, at the time of application it is not necessary for the candidate to have made such an enrollment, and proof of enrollment must be presented until the fellowship is contractualized. Candidates are only required to meet the requirements to enroll in the training offer. If there are candidates already enrolled (including attending a course), they compete on an equal footing with those who are not enrolled.

Work plan/ Objectives: In most of the published studies, the prediction of epileptic seizures is based on the extraction of temporal or frequency characteristics of the electrical signals captured by electrodes glued to the scalp or surgically implanted in the brain mass.
In the present project, the ambition is to follow another approach, using the time series of the focal electrode (closer to the seizure zone), transforming it into images that feed a deep classifier, for example, a CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) since they are dedicated to the classification of images.
The use of a single electrode (and its reference) aims to substantially increase patient comfort, to develop a transportable alarm device.
Classification will be approached from two perspectives: one classifier for 4 classes (interictal, pre-ictal, ictal, post-ictal), or 4 classifiers each specialized in one of the 4 classes.

Work plan
- Bibliographic study;
- Study of techniques for transforming time series into images;
- Construction, from the EEG signals from the Epilepsy Database, of a base of “images” composed by the transformation of the signals of the focal electrode of each patient, during a time window to be determined. This set of “images” will be used for the test and training sets of the classifiers;
- Construction of prototypes of the architectures of the classifiers and obtaining exploratory results;
- Study and application of image processing techniques to increase the differentiation of images between different classes (ReCOD – task 5);
- Application to a wide range of patients from the Epilepsy Database;
- Test in a simulated real-time environment (ReCOD - task 6);
- Report & article writing.

Regime: The attribution of the fellowship does not generate or entitle a relation of a legal-labour nature, and the fellowship is undertaken in an exclusive dedication regime. The fellowship holder is awarded the Fellowship Statute of the UC, in its current wording, according to the Research Fellowship Holder Statute , and according to the Regulation for Research Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., both in their current wording.

Location: Department of Informatics Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Coimbra.

Duration: 11 months, and cannot go beyond the project end date (31/12/2023).

Renewal: Not renewable.

Scientific orientation: Professor António Dourado Correia and César Teixeira.

Financial conditions: The amount of the fellowship is € 1.144,64 corresponding to the monthly compensation stipulated in the FCT table (, plus social security (Seguro Social Voluntário, first level contributions), annual tuition fees of €2.750,00 supported by own revenues and personal accidents insurance. The payment will be made by bank transfer. This amount will not be increased during the entire period of the fellowship duration.

Selection methods: CV Evaluation (50%) and Interview (50%).

Selection criteria:
The evaluation of the CV
- Performance in the disciplines of Biosignal Processing and Analysis and Computer Learning – 50%
- Developed work (publications and/or dissertations) in the area of Biosignal Analysis and Processing and Machine Learning with application to neurological disorders – 50%

- Motivation and interest – 100%.

Jury responsible for selection: César Alexandre Domingues Teixeira, António Dourado Pereira Correia and Jorge Manuel Oliveira Henriques.

Formalization of application: Applications must be formalized by submitting all the following elements in
1. Curriculum vitae;
2. Motivation Letter;
3. Master’s Certificate;
4. Documents associated with the work developed;
5. Master’s Degree Academic Transcript;
6. Proof of registration in a Pd.D. course or in a Course not confering an academic degree (Optional - must be presented until the fellowship is contractualized).

Declaration on the honor of the candidate(s) with the indication of the fellowship(s) of the typology to which the contest was held and the respective duration(s).

Applicants with academic degrees obtained abroad will be required to present a Certificate of Recognition in accordance with applicable law. This document is mandatory only in the contractualization phase.

Applications submission: Applications must be submitted in

Submission of applications: Between 16/01/2023 and 27/01/2023.

Submission deadline date: 27/01/2023.

After the announcement of the results, candidates are considered automatically notified to, if they wish to do so, comment on the results on a preliminary hearing period within 10 days after that date. After this, the selected candidates will have to declare in writing their acceptance. Unless a justification worthy of consideration is presented, if the declaration is not submitted within the referred period, it is considered that the candidate waivers the fellowship.
