OFFER DESCRIPTION

Applications are invited for a one-year postdoctoral research position, starting as soon as possible from 1 February 2021 onwards and renewable at least once with another year, to coordinate and carry out quantitative historical-comparative linguistic research within the ERC-funded BantuFirst project (https://www.bantufirst.ugent.be/) led by Prof. Dr. Koen Bostoen at the Department of Languages and Cultures of Ghent University.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD;

  • You have expertise with quantitative approaches to comparative language data, such as computational phylogenetics, computer modeling and/or the analysis of large cross-linguistic databases;

  • You have a keen interest in historical linguistics and the study of African languages;

  • You have published in international peer-reviewed journals;

  • You have presented at international conferences;

  • You have good knowledge of English as well as sufficient knowledge of French to work with Francophone literature on African languages;

  • You are a dynamic and enthusiastic team player.

Job Description

  • You will be part of the UGent Department of Languages and Cultures (http://www.talenenculturen.ugent.be) and operate within the UGent Centre for Bantu Studies (http://research.flw.ugent.be/en/bantugent), associated with the UGent African Studies program (http://www.africanstudies.ugent.be);
  • You will be responsible for the compilation of a comparative dataset containing lexical and grammatical data of the West-Coastal Bantu and surrounding languages from existing sources. You will conduct quantitative analyses in order to gain a better understanding of the internal classification of these languages, to address the question of prehistoric language contact with autochthonous hunter-gatherers, and more generally, to assess the role of linguistic and non-linguistic factors in their evolution;
  • You will collaborate closely with and report to the PI, who is a historical Bantu linguist, and work with him and other linguists associated to the project as well as other BantuFirst team members focussing on bodies of evidence from other disciplines, such as archaeology and archaeobotany. A keen interest in interdisciplinary approaches to the African past is required;
  • You will collaborate with the project’s international partners including geneticists, archaeobotanists and archaeologists;
  • You will have the opportunity to participate in the project’s fieldwork missions in Central Africa planned in 2021 and 2022;
  • You will be expected to carry out both independent and joint research, and to disseminate research results together with the BantuFirst research team via publication in international peer-reviewed journals, participation in conferences and popularization for a wider audience;
  • You might be invited to teach classes in UGent’s BA in African Languages and Cultures and/or MA in African Studies and to participate in the supervision of BA and MA students doing research in the field of Bantu linguistics.
