Recent research has been rewriting the history of ancient Amazonia from one that proposed sparse settlement and limited human impacts on landscapes to one that shows widespread settlements that fundamentally shifted these landscapes. However, the ways in which these societies arose and interacted with their environments over the millennia remain to be understood.
This project seeks to explore the relationships among changing environmental conditions, settlement patterns, food production, and mobility throughout the Holocene in Southwestern Amazon. The University of São Paulo's Archeology and Ethnology Museum in Brazil is the project's host institution.
These lines of inquiry will be investigated through archaeological excavations and the reconstruction of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment at archaeological sites, specifically fluvial shell mounds, through the analysis of stable isotopes in faunal material as well as the analysis and interpretation of multiproxy data including microbotanical and faunal data. Stable isotope analysis will 1) focus on the analysis of fluvial mollusks, in particular Pomacea sp., 2) complement the archaeological data, and 3) enhance extant paleoclimate proxies already being investigated in the region.
This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. The selected candidate will receive a Post-Doctoral fellowship from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) in the amount of R$ 7,373.10 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 10% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.
