OFFER DESCRIPTION

An Early-Stage Researcher (ESR4) will be recruited as a PhD candidate at the Graduate School of Life Sciences and Biotechnologies, University of Sassari, to perform research in antibacterial drug discovery as part of the H2020-funded ITN project INNOTARGETS (https://innotargets.ku.dk/) at Porto Conte Ricerche Srl  (Alghero, Italy).

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing medical challenge, hampering the effectiveness of existing drugs and threatening the lives of patients. Therefore, there is a pressing need for compounds that re-sensitise drug-resistant bacteria to existing antimicrobials. To address this problem, the EU-funded INNOTARGETS project will train early-stage researchers in the identification of novel metabolic drug targets in pathogenic bacteria. The project comes as a collaboration between academia and industry and will guide researchers to use innovative approaches to achieve their scientific goals. INNOTARGETS aims to provide ESRs with scientific and technical skills attractive to both industry and academia. ESRs will be equipped with complementary skills deemed important for research team leaders, will have an individual profile according to their own career dreams and will be capable of life-long self-directed learning. Each ESR will work closely together with 11 other ESRs in the INNOTARGETS network.

The selected candidate will be employed as "ESR4" for three years at Porto Conte Ricerche Srl (Alghero, Italy; http://www.portocontericerche.it/en), where he/she will perform most of the research work aimed at characterizing the changes in expression of metabolic enzymes during skin infection with Staphylococcus aureus, by a proteomic approach. Highly abundant proteins at the infection site compared to growth in broth will be assumed to be important for infections, and will be subjected to further characterization for their role during infection. ESR4 is expected to perform part of the research work at secondment institutions at Heinrich Heine University (Düsseldorf, Germany), and at the company NUREX, Sassari, Italy, and to register for a PhD programme in the field of Life Sciences and Biotechnologies at the University of Sassari (Sassari, Italy).
