Postdoctoral position in paleogenomics
(Full time, 35 hours per week)
The Veeramah Lab at Stony Brook (https://you.stonybrook.edu/veeramahlab/) has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to begin in immediately to conduct research using paleogenomics as part of an ERC Synergy project, HistoGenes (https://www.histogenes.org/).
The position is funded for five years and will involve the bioinformatic processing and population genetic analysis of paleogenomic data from 5th—9th century Europe being generated in collaboration with labs in Leipzig (Germany). This individual will also interact closely with HistoGenes PI Professor Geary of the Institute for Advanced Study, and will communicate frequently with other researchers involved in the project. This postdoc will have a strong emphasis on integrating genetic data with data other disciplines to answer the major historical questions. As well as primary research duties applicants will be expected to write papers, help in grant writing and train/mentor graduate students.
Task 1 (70%): The analysis of genome sequence data from a variety of Medieval European samples generated as part of the HistoGenes ERC project, with a particular emphasis on integrating genetic data with other disciplines to answer the major historical questions. This will involve close interdisciplinary contact with PIs and postdocs at other institutions (70%)
Task 2 (20%): Manuscript preparation including manuscript writing, editing, and figure preparation. Will collaborate with PI and colleagues (including at other institutions) on results and technical details for publication of results (20%)
Task 3 (10%): Supervising/mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in analysis of 2nd generation sequencing data for population genetics (10%)
The successful applicant should have:
- a PhD in the areas of population, evolutionary or anthropological genetics
- at least two years postdoctoral experience in the areas of population, evolutionary or anthropological genetics
- experience in processing 2nd generation sequencing data and analyzing paleogenomics data
- knowledge of python or equivalent or programming languages
- excellent English skills as demonstrated by peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts

The starting salary is $56,000 with an annual 3% raise. Applications will be accepted until Dec 11. The successful application will be able to start immediately, and will be able to work remotely during the initial period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
