Context

The SATIE lab has a long-standing experience in energy management optimization. It associates with the IRIT lab, specialized in multi-agent systems, to develop real-time and decentralized energy management strategies based on multi-agent systems, and applicable to large-scale systems, which is the goal of project “Namaste” sponsored by the R&D department of French energy provider EDF (through the PGMO programme (“Programme Gaspard Monge pour l’Optimisation”). The considered optimization problem will focus on smart grids, and in particular on the grid integration of electric vehicles considering power systems technical constraints (ex: congestion, voltage), as well as constraints and objectives inherent to other actors of the energy markets (aggregators, etc.).

The proposed post-doctoral position will include activities ranging from code production, to numerical simulations based on an existing multi-agent platform developed in Java and Python, to optimization studies for comparative analyses using well-known methods (e.g. MILP) and solvers (e.g. Gurobi). The post-doc researcher will receive training from SATIE on energy management optimization and power systems, as well as on multi-agent systems from IRIT.

 

Job profile

The post-doc researcher will:

- propose new solutions in the form of energy management strategies (both deterministic and stochastic) in order to increase the performance of the system. The integration of machine learning techniques (such as deep learning or reinforcement learning) is targeted.

- perform the optimization problem modeling based on well-known methods (e.g. MILP), to be solved with conventional tools (e.g. Gurobi), whose simulation results will be used as benchmarks.

In addition to these main tasks, the recruited post-doctoral researcher will participate in student supervision. He/she will collaborate with a PhD student on-site, as well as with another PhD student located at IRIT in Toulouse, France. In this context, contributions in the development of simulation plans and scenarios to be carried out with the existing multi-agent platform, as well as in the extension of this simulation platform developed in Java and Python to include more features (e.g. load types, etc.) will be appreciated.

Competencies/skills

The candidate should hold a PhD (or equivalent) in computer science, applied mathematics, numerical modeling, or electrical engineering with a strong interest in applied mathematics and programming.

Knowledge in machine learning techniques (such as deep learning or reinforcement learning) would be highly appreciated, as well as knowledge in object-oriented programming, as well as in Java or Python. An experience or background in optimization would also be appreciated. In addition, strong analytical thinking skills and critical thinking capabilities are required, and teamwork skills would be appreciated.

An interest in smart grids and renewables grid integration would be a plus.

 

Starting date

Flexible: between February 2021 to July 2021.

 

Salary and benefits

Salary based on CNRS[1] salary scale, and dependent on the recruited post-doc’s experience level (2700€ to 3100€/month gross for an early post-doctoral researcher (less than 2 years of post-doctoral experience)). The recruited post-doctoral researcher will also benefit from the French social security system (health insurance, retirement scheme, unemployment insurance), and may be entitled to additional benefits (housing support (APL), etc.). Location

The post-doctoral position will be located in SATIE, ENS Rennes and is highly telecommuting-compatible. Occasional short stays in IRIT, Toulouse are planned but will depend on the sanitary conditions.
