OFFER DESCRIPTION

The AlchemEast project is devoted to the study of alchemical theory and practice in contiguous areas: Graeco-Roman Egypt, Byzantium, and the Near East, from Ancient Babylonia to the early Islamic Period. AlchemEast is designed to carry out a comparative investigation of cuneiform tablets as well as Greek, Syriac and Arabic writings. The textual investigations will be combined with experimental replications of ancient alchemical procedures. Sets of historically and philologically informed laboratory replications are instrumental in restoring the operational basis of ancient alchemy. Within this framework, the appointed candidate will focus on the Arabic corpus of alchemical writings attributed to Jabir ibn Hayyan, in particular on the treatise entitled 'Book of the Rectifications to Plato'.
