Project Summary:

This project aims to study the impacts of the adoption of telework and e-shopping in mobility and urban form. Specifically:

• The effects of telecommuting frequency on weekly distances traveled by mode (affecting emissions), travel schedule (affecting congestion levels) and activity spaces (which influences the modal choice and spatial distribution of congestion);

• Relationships between e-shopping adoption and in-store purchases (complementarity, substitution, neutrality and modification);

• The relationship between telework and e-shopping;

• Residential location and preferences and office location such as result of the adoption of telework;

• Retail location as a result of the adoption of online shopping and telework;

• Estimate the global spatial impacts for the Lisbon Metropolitan Area resulting from different scenarios of adoption of telework and e-shopping and discuss these results with policymakers.

The data collected here will also be compared in terms of indicators of mobility with pre-pandemic travel and shopping surveys. The project will employ different specifications and statistical modeling methods depending on the phenomena analyzed and is organized into 7 main tasks, 5 of which are directly related to empirical work, one to the project management and another with the dissemination of results. The contributions of this project are related to its objectives. We will contribute to new knowledge about the relationships between telework, e-shopping and patterns of mobility. This project will have national and international relevance. Telecommuting and e-shopping are understudied topics in Portugal. At the international level, the The research design adopted here aims to address relevant gaps in similar studies identified in the bibliography, namely issues of causality and self-selection. When studying the strategies of locating families and companies, we will also provide new evidence on the effects of telework and e-shopping in the urban setting and we will provide policymakers relevant information. We will also innovate by relating qualitative and quantitative methods, using the insights provided by structured interviews to derive the design of subsequent surveys and adjust some of the research hypotheses.
