Under the supervision of the coordinator of the Khaybar-history project, and in conjunction with other researchers in the scientific program, the researcher will identify the characteristics and dynamics of settlement within the Khaybar oasis during the Islamic era. She/he will ensure the excavation and interpretation of the Islamic archaeological remains of the oasis, over an area covering almost 60 sq. km in western Saudi Arabia. She/he will also assist the coordinator in the preparation of field missions, logistically and scientifically, and in the management of data from the excavation (database, GIS). An excellent knowledge of the Islamic archeology of the region, as well as a good command of Arabic and a strong motivation to publish scientific results quickly will be determining criteria.

The Khaybar Oasis, located in western Saudi Arabia, is a hotbed of local history. It has been preserved for millennia, and its human occupation seems to have been virtually uninterrupted from earliest prehistoric times to the present day. The new Khaybar archaeological prospecting and excavation project began in October 2020, and will last until the end of 2024. The project is co-directed between G. Charloux (CNRS, UMR-8167 Orient & Méditerranée) and R. Crassard (CNRS, UMR-5133 Archéorient); it is funded by the French Agency for the Development of AlUla (Afalula, France), in partnership with the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU, Saudi Arabia). The main objective of the project is to provide new archaeological documentation to understand human occupation and the environmental dynamics of the Khaybar oasis over time.
The position will be based in Ivry-sur-Seine, within the Orient & Méditerranée laboratory (CNRS, UMR8167). It will also involve trips to Lyon (in collaboration with the Archéorient laboratory (CNRS / Lyon 2) and to the Jalès Archéorient branch in the south of Ardèche region. The post-doctoral fellow will be called upon to participate in all field expeditions (minimum three months per year) where she/he will contribute to the organisation and conduct of scientific field operations.

Fixed-term contract for 1 year (renewable over 3 years) from January 4, 2021.

Remuneration according to experience, based on the CNRS “chargé de recherche” index.

Recruitment will be done by videoconference in early December 2020.
