OFFER DESCRIPTION

The project explores the interplay of technique and power in Late Antique and Medieval Iran, with reference to automata and ingenious devices (i.e. self-operating machines, such as mobile thrones, artificial trees, vessel tricks, or water and candle clocks) as a case study. The project, which sits at the crossroad of the history of science, intellectual history, and art history, thus asks relevant questions about the conception, production, and utilization of ingenious devices in Late Antique and Medieval Iran. By analyzing references to such devices found in Arabic, Middle Persian, Persian, and classical sources, it aims at shedding light on the dynamics that led the Sasanian court to finance and promote the construction of automata and ingenious devices. Moreover, the project will study the role played by automata in the promotion of Sasanian kingship, focusing on the use of automata by Sasanian rulers to impress, frighten, or befriend allies and enemies alike.
