College of Life and Environmental Sciences (Living Systems Institute)
A Graduate Research Assistant Early Stage Researcher post is available immediately until the end of December 2021 at the Exeter Campus funded as part of an EU H2020 Marie-Sklodowska Curie Innovative Training Network. The one year post includes a PhD programme within the College of Life and Environmental Sciences.
About the role
We are looking for a dedicated Early Stage Researcher to join the EvoCELL network to develop transgenesis tools for the marine annelid Platynereis dumerilii for the manipulation of the activity of individual neurons in this fully-mapped nervous system. The ESR will use a combination of approaches, including molecular cloning, microinjection, connectome reconstruction, immunostaining, confocal microscopy and other tools. She will receive in-depth training in molecular neuroscience, imaging and neural circuits. The 12 month position is part of the EvoCELL Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Innovative training Network (www.evocell-itn.eu). The ESR will join the group of Professor Gáspár Jékely. The successful applicant will work in the Living Systems Institute in the field of neuroscience, contributing to the study of neural circuits and behaviour in the marine annelid model Platynereis.
EvoCELLThe EvoCELL network comprises 11 European partner laboratories joining forces to elucidate the evolution of animal cell types by comparative whole-body single-cell RNA-seq approaches. The network, coordinated by EMBL Heidelberg, brings together 8 academic and 2 non-academic organizations from 6 European countries, including a company and a museum. Partners have complementary expertise in evolutionary developmental biology (EvoDevo), bioinformatics, functional neurobiology, and paleontology. The fellow will also have the opportunity to take part in the network training activities and benefit from established collaborations.
Living Systems Institute
The Living Systems Institute is a new inter-disciplinary research centre at the University of Exeter housing over 30 research groups working in the areas of animal development, neurobiology, biophysics, stem cells and mathematical modelling. The inter-disciplinary vision for the LSI requires the physical colocation of scientists with very broad skills, and the provision of high-specification technologies. The University of Exeter has invested £52 m in the innovative LSI building. This is the University's largest single investment in science, and part of an overall investment of £340m since 2008. The LSI building was completed in autumn 2016 and is now home to an interdisciplinary team of scientists. (https://www.exeter.ac.uk/livingsystems/)
The ideal candidate should have experience with the molecular biology of marine invertebrates, as well as excellent experience in molecular biology techniques. Prior experience with transgenesis studies or analysing gene expression and functional data in animals is strongly preferred. Experience with. The working language is English, therefore proficiency in this language is required. The fellow will receive a competitive salary, including a mobility allowance
In order to be eligible to apply for this position, candidates should have completed their Master studies (or a degree that allows them to embark in a PhD in their country of origin or in the hosting country), no longer than 4 years from the start of the fellowship.
