PhD Student Position (f*m)
(part-time, 30h per week)
for a duration of 24 months, starting with January 1st, 2021.
For the FWF-project „Fingerprinting white marbles“ (P 33042), a PhD student position is available for the topic "Organisation, transportation and logistics of marble from the quarries to the cities in Roman Thrace“. The project is part of an Austrian Bulgarian joint research program under the direction of S. Ladstätter, W. Prochaska (both ÖAI) and H. Popov, Z. Dimitrov (both NAIM).
The aims of the project are a petrographic-geochemical classification of Thracian white marbles used in antiquity by comparing quarries with the marble landscape of cities and villas, taking into consideration architecture, sculpture and inscriptions. Based on Roman economic models, scientific questions regarding demand-based production, regional markets, workshops, as well as a connection between the quality of the raw material and the kind of the final product will be tracked.

- Depth-in study of transport routes from the quarries to the customers

- Carrying out a dissertation project, which is compatible with the research area of the institute
- Master’s degree in Archaeology or Ancient History
- Interests in interdisciplinary research, especially the interface between geology and archaeology

We offer an annual gross salary of € 30.878,40 according to the salary scheme of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
