OFFER DESCRIPTION

In an unpublished paper written in July 1938, in order to refute the theories according to which
the Italian Jews did not belong to the Italian people, Edoardo Volterra also used some Greek and
Latin ancient sources. He tried to demonstrate that already under the Roman Empire the Jews
living in Rome and in the Italian peninsula were distinct from the Jews of Palestine, as Roman
citizens, although not followers of the pagan religion.
In this regard, he quoted some passages by Flavius Iosephus, Cassius Dio and Juvenal, also
recalling the contribution offered by inscriptions and papyri.
