OFFER DESCRIPTION

The Universitat Rovira i Virgili, in collaboration with the research institutions affiliated to the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS), is launching the Martí i Franquès research grants programme, a public-private cooperation designed to attract highly talented doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers to work on exciting research projects.

This programme honours the scientist Antoni Martí i Franquès (Altafulla, 1750 – Tarragona, 1832), who made remarkable contributions not only to the fields of biology, physics and chemistry, but also to the economic development of Southern Catalonia. He was the first scientist to accurately establish the composition of air.

To survive and be competitive, companies must capture and generate new knowledge to adapt to the growing changes that occur in today's business environments. Among them, the technological advances that have given way to the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution (or Industry 4.0). Consequently, companies must enhance their competitive capacity with a solid strategy, based on the acquisition, assimilation, transformation and exploitation, by employees in their collaborative teamwork, information and knowledge; in order to generate new knowledge for innovation, and that in its application generate competitive advantages.

The Knowledge Absorption Capacity is a concept that identifies the elements to capture information and knowledge that can be useful for the development and improvement of the activities of the business value chain and formulate and implement the competitive strategy. In this sense, the research project (doctoral thesis) has to be developed by the person who obtains this scholarship will consist of the analysis in the Strategic Management of companies of the incidence of the Knowledge Absorption Capacity on various variables of business management, such as, among other possible: Social Capital (as an element of organizational intellectual capital), Intra and Interorganizacional Learning, Internationalization processes, Innovation, Creativity, Management Styles, Structural Configurations, Organizational Culture, Employee Skills (both hard skills and soft skills), etc.,... and, of course, the generation of Competitive Advantages, Performance and Business Results. Analysis may also be carried out to compare companies according to size, activity sector, country, etc. In addition to the review of the corresponding literature, quantitative empirical studies should be developed, preferably using structural equation models (SEM), with the initial aim of carrying out a doctoral thesis through the article publication system

Benefits

The employment contract with URV also specifies a series of specific benefits that might differ from other public administration positions:

  • Vacation: 22 working days per year, plus 3 days of personal days off
  • Health Checks: all URV employees have the option of a medical check every year, paid by URV
  • Weeks of maternity leave16 weeks (maternity) or 4 weeks (paternity). Possibility of reduction of working hours for 12 months, after the 16 weeks of maternity leave provided by social security. The reduction of working hours can also be compacted, translating into a 4 weeks break, that can be added to the 16 weeks of maternity leave

Eligibility criteria

for PhD enrolment at URV

  • Hold a Spanish Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, and a Master's degree, or equivalent, and have achieved a minimum of 300 ECTS summing up both degrees
  • OR Hold a degree from another country in the EEES which grants access to a Master's degree and have achieved a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in university studies of which at least 60 must be at Master's level
  • OR Hold of a qualification obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems without the need for official recognition, having previously confirmed with the university that this qualification accredits a level of training equivalent to the official Spanish university Master's degree and that it would serve as a means of access to a PhD in the country in which it was awarded

Selection process

  • The Departmental Councils will form the committees that have to evaluate the applications submitted for each contract. These committees will have three full members and three substitute members who are all members of the department's permanent teaching and research staff and who meet the URV's requirements to supervise doctoral theses.
  • Each committee will assign the contracts in accordance with either its Departmental Council or its Monitoring Committee (according to the circumstances), and its main criterion will be the relevance of each applicant's academic transcript to the area of knowledge pertaining to the contract. The committee members may decide to interview candidates in person. Likewise the committees may issue a list of the successful candidates in order of preference.
  • The committees will agree on a prioritised list of the positively valued candidates.

    After examining the proposal assignation of contracts, the Rector will pass a resolution in which he will name a candidate for each contract in the order proposed by the Departmental Council or Monitoring Committee until all the contracts in the competition have been awarded. The competition may be declared void.
