The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) contributes multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences and Medicine. Through its dual mission of teaching and research, the FSTM seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge and train new generations of responsible citizens, in order to better understand, explain and advance society and environment we live in.
The PhD project is embedded within the PRIDE Doctoral Training Unit, ACTIVE (https://cls.uni.lu/doctoral-training/), and the selected PhD candidate will conduct her/his research in the Physics of Living Matter Group headed by Prof. Anupam Sengupta (Department of Physics and Materials Science). The project foresees ample collaborative opportunities with research groups in the ACTIVE consortium, spanning the Luxembourg Center for Systems Biomedicine and the Department of Engineering, University of Luxembourg. The PhD student will be enrolled in the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering at the University of Luxembourg, and follow a vibrant PhD program that includes training in transferable skills, support for career development, lectures and teaching by international experts and annual PhD symposia.
The PhD project interfaces two rich fields of research: Active Matter Physics and Physics of Complex Fluids, with an overarching goal to understand the dynamics of biological species (eukaryotes and prokaryotes) in relevant environmental settings. The selected PhD student will conduct her/his research in the Physics of Living Matter Group headed by Prof. Anupam Sengupta (DPHYMS), with exciting collaborative opportunities globally, and within Luxembourg. During the PhD research, the candidate will carry out experiments and simulations, to uncover biophysical principles that regulate the dynamics of biological active matter in complex environments. A specific focus will be put on the role of biophysical coupling between microbial species and their environment in the context of novel bioremediation and biomedical science and applications. By combining microfluidics, microbiology and a range of microscale imaging techniques, candidates will analyze how feedback between environment and species regulate key biological processes.
We are seeking excellent and highly motivated candidates holding a Master’s degree in a field related to the topic of the program (MSc or equivalent in Natural Sciences or Engineering Sciences). Candidates should have demonstrated background in experimental soft matter physics, biophysics or active matter physics. Candidates with experience or knowledge in quantitative imaging and image analysis (MATLAB or Python), machine learning techniques or basic programming/coding will be preferred. Fluency in English is mandatory. Willingness to work in an inter-cultural and international environment, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team, are desired.
