The Research Committee (Special Account for Research Funds) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in the framework of the project “Harnessing Data and Technology for Journalism” funded under European Commission – HORIZON 2020, Marie Skłodowska-Curie, with Academic Head, Prof. Andreas Veglis, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, invites candidates to submit applications for two (2) position (through the award of a work contract), for 18 months with a total anticipated remuneration 134.386,92 euro (VAT and taxes included).

1. Job Description

The Media Informatics Lab, School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is offering a research associate position to develop research on data journalism. The researcher will develop best-practice for understanding data journalism, critical understanding of the integration of data science practices into newsroom structures, and an understanding of the contribution of data techniques to the socio-political role of journalism. Applicants are asked to consider the impact of the introduction of data journalism in newsrooms, and the obstacles that must be overcome in order for data journalism to become mainstream journalism. Applications are welcomed from journalism studies, communication studies, data science, and related disciplines.

The successful candidate will undertake full-the publication of a research paper to a scientific journal on the area of data journalism and he will also develop a best-practice guide on data journalism. In addition, the successful candidate will receive a personalised training plan to develop skills for future employment in academia or industry. This will include participation in JOLT training events (to develop domain specific skills, general research skills, and transferable skills) and a secondment/work-placement in a research environment.

WP2: New news practices:

• Develop critical understanding of new technology and data driven journalism practices;

• Advance the infrastructural delivery of digital journalism services;

• Advance techniques for ICT and data-driven journalism;

• Develop best practice guidelines for new journalism practices.

Expected Results:

One Research paper on data analysis and data reporting.

One best practice guideline for data journalism.

Planned secondment:

In the frame of the project, the ESR will be seconded of approximately four (4) weeks to BBC media organization during the first year of the project (M12) to learn about the integration of data journalism in newsrooms.

Selection process

Documents Required:

2. Responsible Statement of Law 1599/1986 (signed), in which it is stated that:

• At the time of recruitment, the candidate has not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Greece for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the reference date (indicative start of the employment contract, 1 November 2020). (This criterion is more flexible in the case of candidates who have been declared refugees in accordance with the Geneva Convention. In particular, for those people, the period before their official designation as refugees is not counted as a residence / activity period in the beneficiary's country. This period will be calculated from the day of their recognition as refugees).

• The candidate does not have any research experience or in case he/she have already gained prior work experience in academia, he/she is in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of his/hers research career at the time of recruitment by the host organisation and has not been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when you obtained the degree entitling you to embark on a doctorate, even if a doctorate was never started or envisaged. Part-time research experience will be counted pro-rata.

Male candidates must have fulfilled their military obligations or have been legally discharged from them or have been deferred for the entire duration of the project.

Additional comments

Candidates who meet the required qualifications will be invited for an interview (at office/via Skype/ via phone - upon written notification by email), except those who will obtain at least 60 points (interview score range) lower score than the first candidate in the ranking. Missing a scheduled interview is cause for rejection.
