Lucrative and Rewarding Career Opening for a Consultant Microbiologist.

I am delighted to present this role based in the Infection Science Department. The Department of Infection Science consists of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology, all centralised. Consultant microbiologists will be required to work across site on a rotational basis.

Applicants will be encouraged to support the development of a joint microbiology and virology consultant team.

The virology service offers viral serology and PCR tests, it is a reference centre for Bird Breeders and Farmers Lung, and provides a number of tests to other Trusts within the UK and Ireland.

The immunology and virology laboratories are fully integrated with shared staff and platforms but with separate clinical leadership arrangements.

The infection control team includes five IPC Nurses and an IPC Matron. They work as a team across both sites in conjunction with the DIPC and consultant microbiologists.

There is provision for remote access to Trust IT systems which allows off-site validation to results.

Working from home can be arranged on occasions with agreement from the Clinical Director.

The on call microbiologist is on-site on Saturday mornings for clinical validation and time off in lieu is given for this commitment. Other on call including Sunday morning validation is usually provided remotely. It is expected that the appointee will contribute equally to the out-of-hours-work and on-call rota.

Voted one of the best places to live in the UK, North Cumbria houses the Lake District, one of the country's most outstanding places of natural beauty and the region is an attractive, largely rural area with access to good road, rail and air communications. Housing is relatively inexpensive and there are excellent state and private education establishments.

The Laboratories

The Department of Infection Science is accredited to ISO:15189 standards. The Laboratory consists of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology, all of which participate in appropriate UK National Quality Assessment Schemes. The laboratories are currently registered with the Health Professions Council as a training laboratory for Biomedical Scientists.

A fully comprehensive Microbiology, Virology and Immunology Service.

The laboratory information management system relies on Telepath for request entry, work scheduling, result entry and report printing. This is integrated with ICE for ward ordering of tests and electronic reporting.

There is a category 3 labs plus a dedicated faeces lab. The Microbiology lab is well equipped with a BacTAlert blood culture system, DS2, Don Whitley Anaerobic cabinet, walk in Hot and Cold rooms, IRIS automated urine analyser, Cepheid GeneXpert System and MAST Urisystem.

The Virology service offers viral serology and some viral detection work (but not culture) to North and West Cumbria. Within this section is a reference centre for Bird Breeders and Farmers Lung. This Laboratory also provides some tests to other Trusts within the UK and Ireland. A variety of PCR tests including Influenza, VZV, HSV, and, Norovirus testing is carried out within the department. The laboratory also receives samples for Chlamydia and Gonococcal screening by PCR for Cumbria CCG.

Immunology is also based in this Laboratory providing a wide range of tests, which complements Virology and other areas of Microbiology. This service has excellent relationship with the Regional Immunology Laboratory in Newcastle. The Consultant Medical Immunologist (based at Newcastle) provides cover during periods of absence of the Consultant Immunologist.

The Trust refers samples for Mycobacteria to a specialist centre.

The department is part of the Pathology Directorate.

The Clinical Director is a Consultant Histopathologist. The Clinical Director post is appointed by the CEO and is a permanent appointment with a 3 month notice period.

Infection Control

There are currently 5 Infection Prevention and Control Nurses and an Infection Prevention and Control Matron, employed by North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust. They work as a team across both sites providing cover for one another during working hours. There are two part time secretaries to the Infection Control Team one based on each site.

The appointee will be expected to provide cover for Infection Control when on call.

Infection Control Priorities are:

To continue to improve antimicrobial stewardship within the Trust in line with the 5 year National strategy:

" To further reduce our Clostridium difficile infection rate.

" To minimise the number of surgical site infections.

" Ensuring appropriate action taken to prevent further norovirus outbreaks of the magnitude encountered in winter 2015

" Compliance with CQC regulations 12: Safe care and treatment (IPC) and 15: Premises and equipment (IPC)

It is the responsibility of individual doctors to hold full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
