OFFER DESCRIPTION

One PhD position (three years) is available at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste. This position is supported by the AIMed MSCA-ITN project (www.aimed-itn.eu).. The activity will start on November 2020, under the supervision of dr. Antonella Bandiera.

The PhD degree will be awarded based on successful completion of the research work. Active participation in the training events and workshops organized within the AIMed program will be required. As a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) fellow, the candidate will be expected to contribute to the dissemination of the PhD project’s result through public engagement and other scientific platforms.

Overall, 7 months of the PhD program will be spent at Academic Institutions located in UK, Portugal, France and at a SME located in Spain.

The PhD research activity will focus on:

- the development of bioactive recombinant polypeptides based on elastin endowed with sustained antimicrobial activity. These constructs will be obtained by genetic engineering fusion of functional domains.

- the production of matrices endowed with antimicrobial activity. After their characterization, the components will be employed to obtain bioactive materials and composites. The conditions of functional domain release upon elastolytic stimuli from the matrix will be set up and evaluated to reach the proof of concept and prototypes.

- formulation of bio-inks suitable for 3D printing based on the produced bioactive recombinant polypeptides.

All these activities are expected to lead to the realization of prototypic devices and coatings capable of smart release of the bioactive domain upon proteolytic stimuli to be employed for othopedic applications. In this context, IP protection issues will be carefully considered and together with dissemination, knowledge transfer, participation and organization of events will be an integral part of the training program as well. The data and results obtained will be reported in the PhD thesis.

The successful candidates will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for early stage researchers. The exact salary will be confirmed upon appointment and is dependent on the country correction factor (to allow for the difference in cost of living in different EU Member States). The salary includes a living allowance, a mobility allowance and a family allowance (if married or with children). The guaranteed PhD funding is for 36 months (i.e. EC funding, additional funding is possible depending on local research group). In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skill courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.

Eligibility criteria

Early-stage researchers (ESR) are those who are, at the time of recruitment by the host, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided. That means typically, for European (or Worldwide) applicants, in the first four years after their Master’s degree.

Eligibility and admission requirements for this position:

Applicants must hold one of the following qualifications:

a Master's degree or equivalent in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry,  Biomaterials, Materials Science, Biomedical and Tissue Engineering or a related field. (minimum classification 2:1)

the academic qualification awarded abroad must be recognized as equivalent ("equipollenza") of the Italian degree known as “Laurea specialistica" or "Laurea magistrale”, or the Italian degree awarded prior to Ministerial Decree D.M. no. 509/99, as amended by D.M. no. 270/04;

the foreign academic qualification awarded abroad has to be comparable for its duration, level and academic field to the Italian degree which grants access to the PhD Programme. Suitability of the candidate’s academic qualification for enrolment on the PhD Programme shall be assessed by the Examining Board, in compliance with the relevant laws in force in Italy and in the country where the qualification was awarded as well as with international treaties or agreements on the recognition of qualifications. Conditions of international mobility of researchers: Researchers are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment. At the time of selection by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.

English language: Network fellows (ESRs) must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training.

Skills/Qualifications

The fellow will take part to the research activities already ongoing at the HELP lab, thus a background in DNA manipulation and analysis, construction of DNA plasmids, growing E. coli strains, standard microbiologic techniques (MIC, agar diffusion, etc), expression of recombinant proteins and protein analysis will be favoured.

Since realization of materials with high potential of exploitation at the commercial level is foreseen, management of Intellectual Property (IP) together with dissemination of the project’s results will represent an important part of the experience, thus interest in these issues would be greatly appreciated.

This position will require to exercise good time management and problem-solving skills; to perform and to document research in an organized, methodical and analytical manner; to contribute to analyse data for publications and to write; to work both independently and in cooperation with colleagues; to contribute to the training of students at both the graduate and undergraduate level.

The fellow will play an important role in meetings and summer-schools organization as well as workshops and symposium supported by the supervisor.

  • At the time of recruitment, the applicant must not have resided (or carried out his/her main activity e.g. work, studies, etc.) in Italy, for more than 12 months in the last three years immediately prior to the reference recruitment date
  • At the date of recruitment, the applicant has to be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of the research career and has not been awarded a doctoral degree.
  • Affinity and/ or experience in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and/or biotechnology
  • Interest in dealing with scientific knowledge dissemination as well as with IP protection issues
  • High motivation and an outstanding M.Sc. degree
  • An integrative and cooperative personality with excellent communication and social skills
  • Fluency in English – written and oral.
