OFFER DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and teaching both general and specific courses on the undergraduate and graduate levels at the Faculty of Archaeology. These courses cover a broad range of topics and themes and are aimed at developing a long-term perspective on the evolution of the human niche throughout prehistory. The successful candidate will be encouraged to incorporate their own area of specialization into these courses – research-led teaching is a goal. You will contribute to the supervision of students within the BA, MA, and MSc programs.

The candidate’s focus on the long-term scale of human evolution and human niche construction will help to bring together the teaching as well as the research carried out within various research groups (specifically within the Departments of Science and of World Archaeology) of the Faculty of Archaeology.

The successful candidate is required to be an active researcher who produces peer-reviewed publications, acquires external funding and disseminates research results to the broader audiences beyond academia. Commensurate with experience, you will also contribute to administrative and management tasks.

The successful applicant will receive a contract for the duration of 5 years. The possibility of renewal will be discussed after an evaluation in the fourth year. Salary range from € 3,746.- to € 5,127.- gross per month on a full-time basis (pay scale 11 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). Salary scale depends on education and experience. The position is available as of the 1st of December 2020.

Specific Requirements

The department is seeking candidates who demonstrate excellence in teaching and research and whose research interests complement the expertise available in the World Archaeology Department and in the Faculty as a whole. The candidate’s research is related to ongoing projects within the Faculty of Archaeology, including research carried out within the Liveable Planet initiative of Leiden University. The candidate should be a team-player who is able to fit into and work in the Faculty of Archaeology multidisciplinary environment. The candidate has:

  • A PhD in Archaeology with a clear focus on Human Evolution or Niche Construction Studies;
  • Experience in teaching and research in the broad field of Human Evolution or Niche Construction studies;
  • A successful track record in obtaining research funding from national and/or international grant agencies;
  • (Near) native proficiency in the languages of instruction, English and Dutch. NB: If the candidate fulfils all other requirements, proficiency in Dutch (level C1, CEFR) may be acquired within two years after appointment;
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively and collegially in a team;
  • A demonstrable commitment to high quality teaching. Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (BKO). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, she/he must be willing to obtain this qualification within two years.
