The phd program includes 4 different and interdisciplinary curricula in: Molecular Oncology, Computational Biology, Human Genetics, Medical Humanities

In the international scientific environment of our school sites in Milan and Naples, Italy, the European School of Molecular Medicine (SEMM) offers 38 PhD positions. Applicants should hold 2nd level degree (MSc, or equivalent) in any subject related to the PhD research areas and some laboratory experience.

SEMM is a private foundation for higher education in biomedicine. It collaborates with the University of Milan and Naples (awarding bodies) and operates within centers of excellence and promotes the integration of basic research and clinical practice. Science covers virtually every aspect of modern Cell and Molecular Biology, from both the basic and applied research points of view, is highly multidisciplinary and is supported by know-how extending from functional genomics to developmental model systems.

Research centers include: European Institute of Oncology (IEO), FIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology (IFOM), Center for Genomic Science of IIT, National Institute of Molecular Genetics (INGM), Human Technopole, Center for Genetic Engineering (Ceinge), Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM).

All admitted candidates will be awarded a fellowship and will benefit of the Italian health care public system.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must hold the degree at the time of the application, or expecting to receive it by 31 October of the application year.

According to the Italian system, Bachelor of Technology, MBBS and similar, are considered first level degrees and as such are not considered valid for admission to our PhD program.

Selection process

Admission to the program is granted on a competitive basis and is achieved through the procedure described below

Preselection
Right after the deadline a pre-selection will take place. The pre-selection is based on the information included in the application form and in the reference letters submitted. Candidates with excellent academic records, previous research experience related to the main topics of the program and experience abroad are preferred. Candidates with the best scores are shortlisted and invited for the examination in Milan.

Examination
Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, the 2020 selections will be totally conducted remotely. The details will be provided to the preselected candidates in due time.

Examination consists of:
-a multiple-choice test
-an oral exam

Interviews
Personal interviews with the group leaders that offer a position are foreseen after the oral examination.
