Applications are invited for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) of EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie to be hosted at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in the framework of the ETN project ULTIMATE (Bottom-Up generation of atomicalLy precise syntheTIc 2D MATerials for high performance in energy and Electronic applications – A multi-site innovative training action – Grant Agreement n°813036 – H2020 Programme _ Marie Curie Action) under the supervision of Dr. Francesco Bonaccorso. The aim of the PhD activity will be the synthesis of two dimensional materials (S2DMS) as novel (photo)-electrocatalysts for water splitting reaction (hydrogen evolution reaction –HER–, oxygen evolution reaction –OER). The S2DMs include graphene derivatives, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), transition metal monocalcogenides (TMMs) and transition metal oxides (TMOs).

One of the main goal is devoted to the study of the flakes’ thickness/lateral dimension dependence on the electrocatalytic performances to provide (photo-)electrocatalyst optimization guidelines. Morphology engineering and chemical functionalization of the S2DMs will be exploited to enhance their surface-area water splitting activity. In particular, substitutional doping, defect engineering, 2D quantum dots derivation will be exploited as candidate strategies for the development of advanced S2DM-based water splitting electrocatalysts. S2DM-based water spitting electrocatalysts will be coupled with photoactive components, including organic materials (organic molecules, polymers and perovskites) for the relization of photoelectrodes (O2-evolving photoanodes and H2-evolving photocathodes) with solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency (ƞSTH) over than 1%. The final goal is the realization of flexible and self-standing S2DM-based (photo)-electrodes for advanced (photo)-electrochemical cell designs.

Requirements: The ideal candidate must have a Master Degree in one of the following areas: Material Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Physics.

Eligibility criteria: Candidates can be of any nationality, but they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. They must also be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
