Brief description of the institution:

The University of Granada (UGR), founded in 1531, is one of the largest and most important universities in Spain. With over 60.000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 6.000 staff, the UGR has a powerful presence in a city of 250.000 inhabitans. UGR offers a total of 89 degrees, 110 master’s degrees and 28 doctoral programmes through its 123 departments and 27 centers. Consequently, the UGR offers one of the most extensive and diverse ranges of higher education programmes in Spain.

The UGR has awarded with the "Human Resources Excellence in Research (HRS4R)", which reflects the UGR’s commitment to continuously improve its human resource policies in line with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.

UGR is one of the few Spanish Universities listed in the Shanghai Top 500 ranking (http://sl.ugr.es/0aw0). The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) places the UGR in 268th position in the world and as the 4th highest ranked University in Spain, reaffirming its position as an institution at the forefront of national and international research. From the perspective of specialist areas in the ARWU rankings, the UGR is outstanding in Documentation (ranked in the 36th in the world) or Food science technology (ranked 37th in the world), Mathematics and Computer Science (ranked among the top 76-100 in the world).

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group

The candidate will develop his/her research project at our facilities at Pfizer-University of Granada-Junta de Andalucía Centre for Genomics and Oncological Research (Genyo) at the Health & Technology Campus. This center has been devised as a space for excellence research in genomic medicine, focusing on the comprehensive study and understanding of the genetic basis of human diseases in general, placing special emphasis on cancer, complex and rare genetic disorders. It is a multidisciplinary research space, where different professionals from the healthcare, university and business areas interact, making it possible to generate new systems to diagnose, prevent and treat diseases based on the joint and coordinated application of first-rate knowledge in the different areas of genetics.

The Otology and Neurotology group CTS495 at the Instituto de Investigación Biosanitaria (ibs.GRANADA) is focused in the genetics of rare vestibular disorders, particularly the genetic structure of Ménière’s disease, a set of rare disorders with a common phenotype: episodic vertigo, sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus. The condition shows familial aggregation MD with autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive inheritance patterns, incomplete penetrance and intermediate phenotypes, suggesting oligogenic inheritance. Our expertise includes the bioinformatic analysis of exome, genome and RNA datasets; gene-set enrichment analysis to find significant biochemical pathways and biological processes. Our group has sequenced >100 familial cases and early onset MD. We have identified novel mutations in DTNA, FAM136A, PRCKB, DPT and SEMA3D genes and a burden of rare missense variants in OTOG gene in multiplex families.

We also have started to investigate the genetic contribution to tinnitus in several EU Grants (MSC-ITN ESIT, GenderNET+ TIGER, H2020 UNITI). For this, we are following an extreme phenotype is to identify candidate gene with a burden of LoF and missense variants and replicate in different cohorts. We will host an emerging postdoctoral researcher in the fields of auditory, neurotology or neuroscience research, but other expertise will be considered, such as single-cell omics. An outstanding track of peer-reviewed publications is required, and we expect that he/she will develop a research career in translational research.

For a evaluation of your candidature, please send your CV below to Professor Jose Antonio Lopez Escamez (jalopezescamez@ugr.es).
