The Department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University, Roskilde, invites applications for a position as Tenure Track Researcher/Senior Researcher within greenhouse gas emissions from land-use change (LULUCF – Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry) to strengthen the research capacity and research-based advisory activities at the department within this area. The position is to be filled by December 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is subject to negotiation.

Department of Environmental Science
The https://envs.au.dk/en/ominstituttet/Department of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Technical Sciences at Aarhus University. The expertise of the department ranges from physics, chemistry, microbiology, social science, geography, economics, to policy analysis. Basic as well as applied research are conducted on some of the major challenges facing society, such as pollution and pollution control mechanisms, management of land, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services, and climate change. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other authorities. Currently, about 150 staff and PhD students are working at the department. The https://envs.au.dk/en/ominstituttet/atmospheric-environment/Section for Atmospheric Environment consist of three groups: Group for Atmospheric Emissions, Group for Atmospheric Measurements, and Group for Atmospheric Modelling. The selected candidate will mostly be affiliated with the Group of Atmospheric Emissions.

LULUCF activities
The LULUCF-sector encompasses sources and sinks of greenhouse gasses in relation to land use, including forest and agricultural land in rotation, as well as permanent grassland, wetlands, urban land and natural areas. In addition to the mandatory inventory related to article 3.3 under the Kyoto Protocol on afforestation and deforestation after 1990, Denmark decided on electing article 3.4 activities, which included forest management of forests existing before 1990, as well as cropland management and grazing land management, for fulfilling the Danish reduction commitment for the period 2008-12. This entails the continuation of the emission inventory for these activities also in the second commitment period.

With the aim of providing the yearly emission inventory and reporting for the first obligation period, the Danish Ministry for Climate and Energy made an agreement with the Danish Center for Environment and Energy (DCE) at Aarhus University (AU) to develop methods and build up routines for this purpose. Other involved institutions are the Department of Agroecology (AU) and the Department of Geoscience and Natural resources (IGN) at University of Copenhagen.

Description of the position:
The selected candidate is expected to:

  • Contribute to preparation of the Danish national emission inventory for LULUCF – Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry
  • Contribute to existing research and public sector consultancy projects within the area
  • Establish an externally funded research program within a research area focussing on understanding emissions from the agricultural sector
  • Contribute to public sector consultancy projects related to LULUCF
  • Develop and support cross-disciplinary cooperation within the Faculty of Technical Sciences, as well as, relevant national and international research groups
  • Supervise graduate (Master and PhD level) students in thesis research projects
  • Contribute to the development of a new education in environmental science that the department is aiming to establish

Expertise within the Group of Atmospheric Emissions includes:
  • Responsibility for estimating and reporting the official emissions of air pollution and greenhouse gases from Danish sources. The inventories include all pollutants covered by international reporting obligations most notably the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
  • The emission inventories follow agreed international guidelines and forms the basis of compliance checking of Denmark’s international obligations related to emissions.
  • Preparation of emission projections for Denmark’s official submissions to the above-mentioned conventions as well as relevant EU directives and regulations.
  • Maintenance and refinement of a model for spatial distribution of emissions – the SPREAD model. The model is a high-resolution model designed to provide high-quality input to air quality modelling (https://envs.au.dk/en/research-areas/air-pollution-emissions-and-effects...SPREAD).
  • A key activity is participation in international reviews, as the group participates in reviews under the UNFCCC, the UNECE as well as reviews conducted by the European Commission.
  • Experts from the group participate in a range of other projects, both research oriented and advisory projects.

We are looking for a new colleagues with a research background in soil ecology and greenhouse gas emissions in the cultural landscape of temperate environment (agriculture and forestry) for example a degree in agronomy, forestry science, biology or other relevant science education, followed by a research education.

The successful candidate has strong analytical skills and good numeracy, and strong competencies in one or more of the following areas: statistical analysis, database processing, geographic information systems, bioinformatics or programming.

The successful applicant is interested in taking joint responsibility for the Danish emissions inventory for the LULUCF sector and has the desire and ability to support the development of the emission inventory through his/her research activities. The applicant is further expected to build an externally funded research program within his/her core interest.

Applicants must present a relevant publication history and have good communicative skills both in writing and orally, and in both Danish and English. If the native language of the candidate is not Danish, then the candidate is expected to learn Danish to be able to carry out advisory work for Danish authorities. The Department supports Danish courses.

Applicants are expected to thrive in an interdisciplinary research environment and be good at engaging in changing project teams.

Applicants at the researcher (assistant professor) level applying for a tenure track position (usually four years) must as minimum hold scientific qualifications at PhD graduate level, and preferably be able to demonstrate publication activity independent of supervisors, and have at least 2-3 years’ experience on post-graduate research. The successful applicant must show evidence of an emerging productive publication record. Participation in national and international networks of researchers is preferable.

Applicants at the senior researcher level (associate professor) should in addition to a PhD degree, have at least 4-5 years’ experience of post-graduate research. The position requires a proved track record of successful external research funding, as well as a proven publication record in international peer reviewed ISI journals. Experience with international collaboration is essential. A demonstrated research leadership and ability to define and manage research projects are desirable as is a demonstrated ability to successful supervise PhD students and students on Master/bachelor thesis projects on the bases of values of equality, diversity and inclusion. Experience with consultancy/advisory projects is also desirable.

The place of work will be at Aarhus University, RISØ campus, Frederiksborgvej 399, 4000 Roskilde, Denmark, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.
