A PhD position is offered in the framework of H2020 project ASTEP (Application of Solar Thermal Energy to Processes). ASTEP project will create a new innovative Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP) concept focused on overcoming the current limitations of these systems. This solution seeks a modular and flexible integration between the solar field and the thermal storage system. On the one hand, the solar field is based on an innovative design, conceived by UPM and UNED. On the other hand, the thermal energy storage is based on new Phase Change Materials. These technologies are integrated via a control system which will allow flexible operation to maintain continuous service. ASTEP will demonstrate its capability to cover a substantial part of the heat demand of the process industry at temperatures above 150 ºC and for latitudes where current designs are not able to supply it. Its modularity and compactness will also enable easy installation and repair with reduced space requirements. The ASTEP`s process integration will allow full compatibility with the existing systems of potential end-users of SHIP. These aspects will provide a very competitive solution to substitute fossil fuel consumption.
The developed solar concept will be tested at two industrial sites. The first Industrial Site of the proposal belongs to ArcelorMittal, with a heating demand above 220 ºC for a factory located at a latitude of 47.1 N (Iasi, Romania). The second site is the dairy company MANDREKAS, located at a latitude of 37.93 N (Corinth, Greece) with a heating demand for steam at 175 ºC and a cooling demand at 5 ºC. These test locations will validate the ASTEP solution for a substantial part of the potential requirements of industrial heating and cooling demand of the European Union, which is estimated at approximately 72 TWh per year.
The tasks of UPM within the project include the basic and detailed design of the concentrator, the development of a dynamic model of the ASTEP system, the construction of two concentrators for both end users together with the installation of a test rig and testing of the system at laboratory environment. PhD student would be mainly involved in the dynamic model development, system construction and testing.
Temporary contract for the entire duration of project (till april 2024).
First year gross salary: 22000 €.

- Knowledge on energy systems and, more specifically, on concentrating solar power is expected.
- Mechanical background would also be appreciated.
- Basic experience on dynamic system modelling with software such as TRNSyS or OpenModelica.

High motivation is expected. The PhD candidate should make themselves a commitement to hold the position for the entire duration of the project.
