RESEARCHER PROFILERecognised Researcher (R2)
APPLICATION DEADLINE12/07/2020 21:00 - Europe/Brussels
LOCATIONLuxembourg › Luxembourg
TYPE OF CONTRACTTemporary
HOURS PER WEEK40
The opening is within a research project on the integration of carbon nanotubes with liquid crystals exploring properties and performance for new liquid crystal displays. Liquid crystals are very responsive condensed matter phases, changing their properties for very small external forces. Low voltages can induce macroscopic molecular reorientation enabling modulation of the optical characteristics, property widely technological explored in different types of displays. The integration of liquid crystals with performing new materials offers the possibilities of finding new properties and applications. Carbon nanotubes are particularly attractive candidates because of their excellent electrical, thermal and mechanical properties. The extremely high aspect ratio of carbon nanotubes results in a very low concentration threshold for network formation, applied for lightweight conductive composites. These properties, together with the nanotube optical transparency and also with specific properties coming from their interaction with liquid crystals, are at the base of this project,
The project will be carried out in Giusy Scalia’s group, belonging to the Physics and Material Science Department, focused on the physics of condensed matter. Her group works on the physics and technology of liquid crystals in confined geometries and in combination with nanomaterials, especially carbon nanotubes and graphene.
