A fixed-term for 3 years PhD position is open at Mosaiques Diagnostics, Hannover, Germany. The successful candidate will work at the interface between kidney and cardiovascular disease as part of the STRATEGY-CKD H2020-MSCA-ITN (project 860329, https://www.strategy-ckd.eu/). Mosaiques Diagnostics is the leading specialist in clinical proteome and capillary electrophoresis- mass spectrometry (CE-MS) analysis, currently the most advanced technology to identify disease-specific polypeptide biomarkers in body fluids. MOS has published more than 300 papers in leading journals and has also led the consortium that defined standards for clinical proteome analysis. Main research activities are identification of urinary biomarkers for human diseases; sequencing of peptide biomarkers, identification of posttranslational modifications, development of software to analyse multidimensional data; and establishment of proteome maps of human body fluids. Mosaiques’ proprietary technology enables reproducible analysis and evaluation of urine samples with mass spectrometry in a short time, based on a unique and proprietary database of proteins and peptides in human urine from over 70.000 participants. General objectives of the STRATEGY-CKD project

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the loss of kidney function over time. Millions of people suffer from CKD, which also correlates with high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The EU-funded STRATEGY-CKD project has formed a training programme with focus on the gut-kidney axis and the role of the intestinal microbiome in the genesis and evolution of CVD in CKD. The programme involves interaction within a network of 10 multidisciplinary academic and 2 industrial investigators with their teams. They will provide training in scientific and technological skills, covering bacterial and animal molecular and functional studies, state-of-the-art omics, bioinformatics and systems biology to generate insights into the pathogenesis and treatment of CKD-related CVD. The trainees will get exposure to both academic and industry environments to support the future translation of research findings into innovative therapies.

Specific Information for the position

The successful candidate will study CKD-related CVD pathology with a focus on peptide biomarkers that may enable diagnosis, prognosis or prediction of response, with special emphasis on the association with the gut microbiome. The specific project rests on previous work where urinary biomarkers for kidney and cardiovascular disease were identified and validated in large clinical studies. The student will investigate urinary peptides in samples from large cohorts (between 100 and 10000) employing CE-MS, which is available as routine technology platform. Special emphasis is given on the identification of biomarkers significantly associated with progression in disease, and on linking the biomarkers to disease pathophysiology. Candidates are requested:

  1. To hold a Master’s degree in biology, informatics, bioinformatics or relevant fields and have expertise in programming languages like Python, R and /or HTML and Java.
  2. Experience in proteomics data handling and bioinformatics tools for –omics data analysis are desirable.
  3. English proficiency (spoken, written) and excellent communication skills are required.

According to the funding program regulations, the recruited investigator must have legally resided and have had principal activities (work, studies, etc.) outside Germany for at least 3 out of the last 4 years.
