FWF Project: Microbial Interactions in Snow-Covered Habitats (MICINSNOW)

Interactions between fungi (eukaryotes) and prokaryotes are of central importance for their function in the environment, but knowledge about microbial associations and interactions in snow-covered soil is still very limited. The main aim of this project is to identify co-occurrence of prokaryotes and fungi in snow-covered soil of a glacier forefield, to visualize these interactions and to cultivate and identify the involved organisms. The investigation will be carried out in the glacier forefield and as in-vitro approach. Three methodological approaches are combined: 1) DNA and RNA metabarcoding. 2) Co-occurrence network analysis and design of specific FISH probes for visualization of associations. 3) Cultivation of fungi followed by rDNA ITS barcoding, multi-gene phylogenetic analysis in combination with classical methods in fungal systematics. Two PhD´s will be working on complementary topics.

We expect:

  • MSc. in microbiology, biology, mycology or comparable
  • Excellent knowledge in English (knowledge in German is not mandatory)
  • Knowledge in microbial cultivation techniques and in classical and molecular methods of fungal systematics
  • Experience with fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) techniques
  • Knowledge in the R environment is of advantage
  • Enjoying field work, even under adverse weather conditions
  • High motivation, teamwork capabilities, and communication skills

We offer a PhD position in an exciting, multidisciplinary and internationally linked research environment. The gross salary per year is EUR 29.573,60 for 30 hours weekly (according to Standard personnel costs for FWF Austrian science fund projects).

Starting date is October 2020.

Please send your application (including motivation, CV, list of publication, abstracts of theses, etc.) in electronic form to Ursula.Peintner@uibk.ac.at
