OFFER DESCRIPTION

The Laboratoire des Ecoulements Géophysiques et Industriels (LEGI) is a Joint Research Unit (UMR 5519) of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (Grenoble INP) and the University Grenoble-Alpes (UGA). LEGI carries out a wide range of research activities with a common ground: fluid mechanics and related transport phenomena.
Institut P'; is a UPR CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) with the University of Poitiers and ISAE-ENSMA. Its activities cover a broad spectrum of complementary themes and skills ranging from materials physics to fluid and materials mechanics, mechanical engineering and energy. The Unit has a large number of instruments, including equipment of intermediate size between the classic tools of laboratories and those of major research centres. The preferred areas of application are transport and energy, with particular attention to environmental aspects.

The work will be carried out both at LEGI lab (Grenoble) and ENSMA S620 wind tunnel (Poitiers)

The main objective of this thesis is to highlight the ability of vertical axis wind turbines (OWLWIND type) to be a competitive alternative to horizontal axis wind turbines for floating offshore applications. It will in particular highlight the fact that this technology improves the power density of a wind farm thanks to a faster turbulent wake diffusion. To this end, a detailed study of the dynamics of the wake of OWLWIND turbines will be carried out. This fine characterization of the wake will make it possible to extract the relevant physical parameters (speed deficit, intensity of turbulence, dynamics of large-scale vortices, etc.) to propose a reduced order modeling of the wake. It will then be possible:
(i) to implement simulations using this modeling strategy to estimate the performance obtained on a farm scale taking into account the interaction between wind turbines;
(ii) To validate the results obtained in a wind tunnel by testing this wind turbine on a floating system in a swell basin (collaboration with IFREMER Brest).
Expected results:
(i) Obtain a fine mapping of the dynamics of the mean and turbulent speed field within the wake of the wind turbine
(ii) Propose a simplified model of the wake in order to be able to simulate it in farm configurations
(iii) Validate the results obtained in the wind tunnel by experiments on a floating system in a swell basin.
