OFFER DESCRIPTION

The Environmental Geochemistry Group of the Department of Environmental Geosciences (EDGE) within the newly established Center for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science at the University of Vienna is looking for a postdoctoral scientist who is interested to apply geochemistry to questions relating to the co-evolution of humans and the associated microbiome with their environment. Research interests in this area could, for example, include the preservation of environmental and ancient human and microbial DNA by association with mineral phases, the extraction of DNA from such phases, the elucidation of the interactions of DNA and nucleotides with mineral surface by spectroscopic methods, the isotopic tracing of human migration, or the application of non-traditional stable isotopes in this area. We have excellent laboratory infrastructure for trace metal analytics and mineral characterization, plant and microbial cultivation, a clean room laboratory and a MC-ICP-MS isotope lab as well as labs for experimental work in geochemistry. We are part of the MINERVA (Mineralogical Preservation of the Human Biome for the Depth of Time) research platform of the University of Vienna and collaborate closely with Prof. Ron Pinhasi (evolutionary anthropology).

The successful candidate is expected to develop research ideas in collaboration with the group, acquire funding, co-advise a group of PhD students and engage in teaching. Involvement in the department administration as well as in the research administration is required.
