2 PhD/Early Stage Researchers (ESR) positions in Ecohydraulics are available at Politecnico di Torino, within the European Training Network RIBES “River flow regulation, fish BEhaviour and Status”, funded by the European Commission under the EU Horizon 2020 programme Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Network (Grant no. 860800), aimed at finding innovative solutions for freshwater fish protection and river continuity restoration in anthropogenically altered rivers.

Each position (ESR08, ESR14) foresees a 36 months full-time research fellowship contract and an highly competitive salary.

The 2 ESRs will be enrolled in the Politecnico di Torino Doctoral School in Civil and Environmental Engineering and will carry out their research projects within a European consortium (Italy, Sweden, Germany, UK, Estonia and Belgium) of universities, research institutions and companies in an excellent scientific environment with state-of-the-art technologies, with innovative complementary training activities and attractive travel, laboratory and research opportunities.

 

ESR08 - SWIMMING EFFICIENCY OF SMALL-SIZED MIGRATORY FISH SPECIES: THE ROLE OF TURBULENCE AND WATER TEMPERATURE: the project will focus on the assessment of swimming performance of migratory fish species. In particular, the role of flow velocity, turbulence, and water temperature will be investigated. Specific field-based experiments will be designed and carried out thanks to a four-wheel-drive van with a fully equipped moving laboratory (namely MovingLab). Swimming performance tests will be carried out directly in the field using an innovative portable flume that allows for optimally controlled conditions while running experiments. Effects of water temperature and turbulence on small-sized fish species swimming performance will be therefore identified and isolated. Expected results will include: (1) experimental protocol and performance of systematic studies on small-sized migratory fish species; (2) scaling relations quantifying the "swimmability" of a flow at different temperature and turbulence levels.

 

ESR14 - INNOVATIVE CRITERIA FOR ENHANCING TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS FOR FISH PASSAGE AT HYDROPOWER PLANTS: the project will focus on the identification of metrics and threshold values to be used as a reference for designing, by means of CFD tools, improved technical solutions aimed at allowing minimized fish stress during passage across hydropower dams. The current scientific knowledge will be reviewed in order to identify proper hydrodynamics and turbulence metrics/threshold values related to successful fish passage along fishways and to select adequate CFD tools for designing efficient devices using the identified metrics as a reference. The potential use of biomarkers to assess fish stress due to turbulence will be investigated as a possible additional metric for the above purpose. Specific field-based experiments will be designed and carried out in close cooperation with ESR08, thanks to a four-wheel-drive van with a fully equipped moving laboratory (namely MovingLab): specific tests will be carried out directly in the field using an innovative portable flume that allows for optimally controlled conditions while running experiments on small-sized migratory fish species.

Benefits

The selected candidates will receive a 36-months, full-time employment contract as per Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) regulations for early stage researchers, with a highly competitive salary, including a generous monthly living and mobility allowance and (if eligible) a monthly family allowance. 

 

The GROSS SALARY consists of:

  • living allowance: 3.413 EUR/month (40.956 EUR/year)
  • mobility allowance: 600 EUR/month (7.200 EUR/year) 
  • family allowance, if applicable - depending on the family situation at the time when the contract is being concluded: 500 EUR/month (6.000 EUR/year). This amount will be paid should the researcher have family, regardless of whether the family will move with the researcher or not. In this context, family is defined as persons linked to the researcher by (i) marriage, or (ii) a relationship with equivalent status to a marriage recognised by the national or relevant regional legislation of the country where this relationship was formalised; or (iii) dependent children who are actually being maintained by the researcher.

The gross salary  is subject to compulsory deductions following applicable national regulations (such as social security contributions and direct taxes).

 

The selected candidates will be enrolled in the Politecnico di Torino Doctoral School with the opportunity of being awarded a PhD Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The ESRs will benefit from joint supervision, ensuring the successful completion of their individual research projects according to a specific personal career development plan. In addition to their individual scientific projects, the fellows will benefit from further education including internships and secondments within the RIBES consortium (academic and non-academic partners), a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.

 

Secondment periods (to be confirmed)

ESR08: Expected duration: 4 months; Hosting institutions: IREN (IREN Energia SpA - Torino, Italy), IGB (Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries - Berlin, Germany)

ESR14: Expected duration: 6 months; Hosting institutions: UNIPD (Università degli Studi di Padova - Padova, Italy), NOAB (Norconsult AB - Goteborg, Sweden)

 

 

 

Eligibility criteria

 

The 2 PhD positions as Early Stage Researchers are open to applicants of all nationalities fulfilling the following MSCA eligibility requirements (to be carefully checked by candidates before applying):

 

EARLY-STAGE RESEARCHERS: applicants shall, at the date of recruitment, be in their first 4 years of research career (full-time equivalent research experience measured from the date of obtainment of the Degree entitling enrollment in a Doctoral School either in the country in which it was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited) and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.

MOBILITY RULE: applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.

For the enrollment in the Doctoral school the candidate must present by October 31st, 2020 a valide GRE certificate and IELTS with a minimum score of 5.0 (or an equivalent certificate among those listed at https://didattica.polito.it/cla/en/certificates/ or a declaration that the MSc degree issued by a University in which courses are taught in English, i.e. “The medium of instruction was English”)
