The Future Oceans Lab (FOL) of the Marine Research Center (CIM) at the University of Vigo (Spain) is seeking applications for a 2-year project researcher position based in Vigo (Spain). The researcher will be responsible for managing and developing the tasks of an H2020 project where the group participates as partner with the tasks of developing climate vulnerability assessments in marine and transitional ecosystems. The successful candidate will work with Elena Ojea and the rest of the consortia starting in September 2020.

Project and work description:

The FutureMARES project is a highly multidisciplinar project that investigates socially and economically viable actions, strategies and nature-based solutions (NBS) for climate adaptation to safeguard biodiversity and ecosystem functions in marine and transitional ecosystems of European (and other) climatic and ecological regions. The project integrates ecological and social research to develop three climate-ready NBS for the oceans: restoration of habitats, conservation actions and, sustainable and ecosystem-based harvesting. The postdoctoral researcher will be in charge of the development of the project tasks related to the design and implementation of climate vulnerability assessments, including methodological protocols, and will monitor the continuous follow up of the tasks by partners, and deliverables writing. He/she will work with the Principal Investigator and the rest of consortia (FutureMARES).

We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher with experience within the fields of environmental & ecological economics, climate change, ecology and/or sustainability science. We expect candidates with a strong interest in working in adaptation to climate change in the oceans and willing to contribute to cutting edge research questions. We expect that the candidate is highly independent, has leading and managing abilities, ability to work with consortia of international partners, and social abilities to interact with stakeholders.

Additional responsibilities will include: publishing peer-reviewed articles, mentoring junior researchers and potentially co-supervising  PhD students, establishing the requieres research m¡networks to successfully develop the objectives, identifying relevant policy actors and communicating with them, contributing to the team outreach activities to help with the dissemination of the project actions.

 

Benefits

Salary and Benefits:

Full-time contract will have a 2-year duration, and is expected to start in September 2020. There are no teaching duties. Depending on the research record, relevant background and experience, annual salary commensurate with qualifications, will range between €30,000-€40,000 gross.

Eligibility criteria

Required Qualifications:

  • Aspiring candidates should have a finished PhD in environmental science, management, economics or social science, fisheries, marine ecology or related field.
  • Experience in implementing environmental, research or capacity building projects of at least 1 year.
  • Research experience in marine conservation, restoration and/or fisheries.
  • Coding skills and experience with R or similar software for data analysis and visualisation.
  • Have at least two peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognised journals related to the position.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience leading project tasks and implementation, especially in H2020 projects or similar;
  • Experience with climate change research, including impacts and adaptation;
  • Experience with qualitative approaches to environmental management, stakeholder analysis, focus groups, preference analysis, participative methods, etc.;
  • Experience in ecological and social indicators, indices and other representations of complex problems. Experience in climate vulnerability assessments will be highly valued;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain strong relationships with academic, NGO, policy and government partners and to work effectively as part of a highly collaborative research team;
  • Proficiency using GitHub, Shiny, and other online tools for efficient research;
  • Publications in inter-disciplinary journals or in journals from different disciplines will be highly valued;
  • Have scientific independence and capacity to generate ideas autonomously;
  • Linguistic fluency either in Spanish, French or Italian.

Additional comments

All candidates will have feedback with a message as proof of delivery. All candidates complying with the Required Qualifications will be evaluated based on the Preferred Qualifications by the Evaluation Commission formed by research and administrative staff of the University of Vigo. Top candidates will be invited to an individual online interview that will be held in English. The final decision criteria will be based on merits (70%) and the interview (30%).
