At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a position as Research Assistant / Early Stage Researcher (ESR) is available within the Section of Biology and Environmental Science. The position is in the frame of the Marie Skłodowska Curie ETN – European Training Network “AQUAlity” and is open for appointment for the period from 1 July 2020 or soon thereafter to 30 September 2021. There may be a possibility for extension.
Please note that applicants cannot hold a PhD at the time of recruitment and that the candidate must not have resided or carried out study or work activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the last 3 years (see specifics below).
The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Science. The position is located within the Section of Biology and Environmental Science with working place in Aalborg, Denmark. For more information about the d epartment.
The position is related to a specific research project within the AQUAlity project:“Integrated toxicity approach for biosensing CECs”. The ESR will focus on optimization and application of bioanalytical tools targeting contaminants of emerging concern (micropollutants). The project will have a special focus on bioassays relevant for micropollutants and their degradation products in relation to advanced water treatment (e.g., advanced oxidation processes). In addition to the scientific project, the candidate will benefit from continuing education, including workshops and conferences, short stays (secondments) at other institutions within the network (world-leading research centres and companies), and from interaction with the other 14 Early Stage Researchers employed in the framework of AQUAlity. Yearly meetings (summer schools and symposia) of the complete network are foreseen.
European Training Network “AQUAlity”
The successful applicant will be part of the Marie Skłodowska Curie European Training Network “AQUAlity” (https://www.aqual ity-etn.eu/), which is an interdisciplinar cross- sectoral approach to effectively address the removal of contaminants of emerging concern from water. The AQUAlity network consists of 11 Beneficiaries (7 universities, 2 non-profit research organisations, 2 enterprises, of which one is an SME), Academic Institution, which collaborate with 9 companies 7 Partner Organisations (of which 6 are companies and one is a public research body). This European Training Network aims to generate and promote highly skilled scientists with the potential to face the present and future challenges concerning the protection of water resources from contaminants of emerging concern. The successful applicant will be enrolled in a structured training- through- research programme consisting of an individual research project, which includes training on technical and transferable skills.
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions offer attractive salary and working conditions. The successful candidate will receive a salary in accordance with the national legislation of the recruiting institution and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions regulations for ESRs. Exact salary will be confirmed upon appointment.
Employment is in Employment as an ESR will be in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics. Individual salary will be established in accordance with the general conditions of the H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017 Call programme and with the AQUAlity Grant Agreement (no. 765860) stipulated-AQUAlity with the European Commission.
The applicants need to fully comply with the following eligibility criteria, in line with H2020- MSCA-ITN-2017 Call requirements:
- The candidate must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of his/her research careers, at the time of recruitment by Aalborg University (expected on 07.2020). This is measured from the date when the candidate obtained the degree, which formally entitles him/her to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged. Please note that applicants cannot hold a PhD at the time of recruitment.
- Conditions of international mobility of researchers: The position is open to applicants of all nationalities, but the candidate is required to undertake transnational mobility when accepting the position (i.e., move to Denmark). The candidate must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host organisation (Denmark) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment (July 2020). Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.

Appointment to Research Assistant may be for a period of up to three years. Reappointment may be made, but a Research Assistant can only be appointed to Research Assistant for a period of maximum three years. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with an interest in micropollutants, water treatment and environmental chemistry and toxicology. The successful candidate must demonstrate an adequate level of accomplishment and in her/his previous academic career. The candidate is required to have a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Environmental Science or closely related field. Candidates must have a high proficiency level in oral and written English and possess academic writing and presentation skills.
