We are happy to announce the availability of 9 Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions of EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) funded by the HeatNMof H2020 project, an EU Innovative Training Network of MSCA.

About HeatNMof

HeatNMof aims to develop smart multifunctional drug nanocarriers based on versatile porous biocompatible nanometric Metal Organic Frameworks, associated with exceptional drug payloads and controlled releases, and photo- and/or magnetic inorganic nanoparticles, providing both a specific control of reactions inside living entities and additional properties such as imaging and/ or hyperthermia therapy. The successful development of this project, involving academic and industrial partners, will contribute not only to improve the highly societal relevant cancer therapy but also to train the next generation of materials scientists in a highly interdisciplinary and intersectorial research environment.

Job description

ESR1

  • Project Title: Core-shell growing of nanoMOFs onto plasmonic inorganic nanoparticles. Reference: 20.16. MPA1 PRE
  • PhD Objectives: The aim of this PhD project is to prepare core-shell nanocomposites based on biocompatible porous Metal-Organic Frameworks (nanoMOFs) and plasmonic inorganic nanoparticles. His/her tasks will also include the surface engineering of resulting nanocomposites and the synthesis of novel MOF structures.

ESR3

  • Project Title: New MOFs built up from sulfurated ligands.
  • PhD Objectives: The aim of this PhD project in to prepare and thorourgly characterize new MOF built up from sulfurated ligands, this later being a priori able to both enhance the electronic properties of the MOF and its interaction with the iNPs. It will include the synthesis of organic ligands, the study of their reactivity with non-toxic cations, the structural characterization of the derived MOFs, and ultimately the preparation of the most promising solids as nanoparticles.

ESR4

  • Project Title: Synthesis of plasmonic inorganic nanoparticles for integration into nanoMOFs as functional cores or in situ filling.
  • PhD Objectives: The aim of this PhD project is to develop synthetic methods based on colloidal chemistry for: 1) the fabrication and surface engineering of plasmonic inorganic cores, which will serve as “seeds” to grow MOF-based shells thereby leading to core-shell nanosystems; 2) In situ synthesis plasmonic nanostructures within the MOFs porosity.

ESR5

  • Project Title: Engineering the surface of magnetic nanoparticles with metal organic framework. Reference: CB 78369
  • PhD activities: The aim of this PhD project is to produce novel nanoplatform made of combination of magnetic nanoparticles and metal organic framework (MOF) for drug delivery applications. The candidate will learn and develop new protocols for the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles at controlled size, shape, composition and structure (e.g., core-shell) prepared by solvothermal and/or thermal decomposition approaches and develop new coating methods using either surfactants and/or polymers, to promote MOF growing while providing colloidal stability to the decorated MNPs in physiological solutions. In another approach, the PhD student will also be focused on the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles directly within the MOFs porosity and the encapsulation of drug molecules inside MOFs porosity.

  • Project Title: Valorization of the inorganic nanoparticles/nanoMOF composites for a novel triggered drug delivery.
  • PhD Objectives: Evaluation of the patentability and market opportunities of nanocomposites and drug delivery prototypes: analysis of patents, publications and projects; detecting stakeholders, new solutions, new markets and potential implementations, co-operations and impact of the (protected) developments; patent writing; business development, etc.
  • Hosting institution: ISERN Patentes y Marcas in Madrid, Spain. It is also foreseen to expend a brief period at Barcelona Isern premises, in order to acquire technical concepts regarding to patents. ESR7

  • Project Title: Advanced TEM investigation of inorganic-nano MOFs composites.
  • PhD Objectives: The final objective of this research project is to determine the 3D structure of metal organic framework (MOF) for drug delivery applications. This PhD will be supervised by Professor Sara Bals. The PhD student will first need to learn the basic principles of electron tomography. Based on this knowledge, the candidate will be responsible for the development and application of novel approaches to acquire tilt series for these beam sensitive materials. Hereby, aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy will be used in combination with different detectors. Also the improvement of advanced mathematical reconstruction algorithms will be part of the PhD. Finally, the PhD will explore possibilities of studying drug release upon rapid heating by in-situ TEM.

ESR9

  • Project Title: Analysis of magnetic nanocomposites properties and NanoMOF opening under high frequency magnetic field.
  • PhD Objectives: The aim of this PhD project is to determinate the properties of magnetic nanocomposites and analyze the nanoMOF opening under high frequency magnetic fields. The NanoMOFs, synthetisized by other partners in the project, will be composed of core-shell nanocomposites based on biocompatible porous Metal-Organic Frameworks and plasmonic inorganic nanoparticles. The magnetic study of these nanocomposites will consist in measuring their hysteresis loop and heating power under high frequency magnetic fields in order to select the ones with optimized heating power, and understand the link between their structural properties and their heating power. The opening of NanoMOFs containing fluorescent molecules or drug will be mainly investigated using a unique home-made setup allowing real-time observation under a microscope on living cells having internalized nanoMOFs during magnetic hyperthermia experiments. The kinetics, optimized magnetic fields and nanocomposites characteristics will be explored. The effects / mechanisms induced by drug release will be also investigated at a single cell level and in real-time, such as induction of cell death, endo-lysosomes permeabilization, reactive oxygen species generation...

ESR11

  • Project Title: Magnetic nanocomposites for alternating magnetic field-triggered drug release and related cellular study. Reference: CB 78370
  • PhD Activities: The aim of this PhD project is to produce magnetic and magnetic-plasmonic heterostructures properly functionalized with different drugs, characterized and study the drug release profile under alternating magnetic field with local or macroscopic heat generation. Moreover, the drug quantification release will be carried out (with or without AMF exposure) non only on the nanocomposite in test tube but also into cells. Drug effects will be followed by direct measurements by microscopy and elemental analysis but also indirectly by viability assays, fluorescent and immunistochemistry analysis. The candidate will acquire interdisciplinary skills by developing and setting new protocols to produce magnetic nanocomposites for drug delivery, and learning new characterization techniques (magnetic hyperthermia, optical and structural characterization of tumor cells, elemental analysis, immunohistochemistry etc.).

More Information

Benefits

The successful candidates will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for Early Stage Researchers. The exact (net) salary will be confirmed upon appointment and is dependent on local tax regulations and on the country correction factor (to allow for the difference in cost of living in different EU Member States). The salary includes a living allowance, a mobility allowance and a family allowance (if married). The guaranteed PhD funding is for 36 months (i.e. EC funding, additional funding is possible, depending on the local Supervisor, and in accordance with the regular PhD time in the country of origin). In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments (ca. 10 months), a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must satisfy the eligibility requirements for an ESR under the Horizon 2020 ITN Programme at the date of recruitment; in particular, they should be eligible to be appointed as an ESR by satisfying the following criteria:

  • to have less than 4 years research careers after Undergraduate/Masters graduation (this is cumulative research experience and does not include management/industrial or other work experience);

  • to not hold a PhD degree (PhD candidates under 4 years of registration and before completion may apply);

  • to not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the host country for more than 12 months (cumulative) in the three years immediately before their recruitment (meant as the first day of the employment of the researcher for the purposes of the action (i.e. the starting date indicated in the contract). Compulsory national service and short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

  • Expertise on characterization (XRD, TGA, fluid sorption, spectroscopies, microscopies, etc.).
  • Desirable: knowledge on structural resolution (single crystal and/or powder).

ESR2

  • MSc in Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience on material synthesis (coordination chemistry, magnetic nanoparticles), nanomaterials and surface chemistry
  • Expertise on characterization (XRD, TGA, spectroscopies, microscopies, DLS etc.).
  • Desirable: experience on HPLC.

ESR3

  • MSc in Molecular, Coordination or Materials Chemistry.
  • Experience in synthesis (basic organic chemistry and coordination chemistry).
  • Expertise on standard physico-chemical characterization tools (liquid NMR, IR/Raman spectroscopy, TGA).
  • Desirable: experience on structure determination by diffraction (powder and/or single crystal).
