The 36th cycle of the PhD in Ancient Heritage Studies takes a united perspective of the antique world and is directed at utilizing specific methodologies and techniques in order to scrutinize the multiple themes and disciplines relevant to historical and interpretive difficulties proposed by monuments and texts.
The programme has three main subject areas:
- Philology and literature: communication of texts and textual criticism, intertextuality, translation, literary history, text exegesis, publishing of texts in the Medieval and papyrus traditions;
- History: historical and philological historical research – Near Eastern, Aegean and Greek-Roman;
- Archaeology: archaeological research – prehistoric, protohistoric, the Near Eastern, Aegean, classical, Medieval, and post-Medieval.
Given the broad and in-depth preparation, the PhD graduate will be able to integrate themselves not only into the world of academia, but also into that of public and private bodies and institutions (e.g., public – secondary education, library and museums, conservation and preservation of archaeological patrimony etc.; private – publishing houses, companies involved in prospection, digs, restoration, and museum outfitting etc.).
Candidates are required to have certified English proficiency at least B2 level - under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) - at the time of enrolment, except for the possibility of acquiring it subsequently, by no later than December 31st, 2020, otherwise they will be excluded from the PhD Programme (see art. 3, paragraph 6 of the call).
Candidates are required to specify in the online application the knowledge of a second language of their choice that will be tested during the interview. Candidates may not choose the language of their country of origin. However, the official language of the PhD programme is Italian and knowledge of this language is a prerequisite for participation in learning activities.
Duration: 3 years
Gross amount of the scholarship approximately € 56,500.00 (50% increase in the monthly scholarship for research periods abroad and annual budget for national and international research activities - € 1,534.00 during the 2nd and 3rd year- not included).
Candidates will be admitted to the PhD programme after passing a selection process (evaluation of academic qualifications, written and/or oral examination) according to the conditions indicated in the call.
