A 3-year PhD scholarship in polymer science and catalysis is available at DTU Chemistry, starting from October 1st, 2020. The PhD project will be supervised by Professor Anders Riisager, Dr. Eric Manoury and Dr. Karine Philippot (both LCC-CNRS, Toulouse, France), and focus on development of an innovative catalytic tool based on well-defined metal nanoparticles confined inside core-shell polymers.
The project work will be performed partly at DTU Chemistry (Centre for Catalysis and Sustainable Chemistry), partly at the LCC-CNRS Toulouse, and complemented with a stay at a French industry partner. The candidate will obtain a PhD double degree from DTU and Université Toulouse 3 Paul Sabatier.
The PhD project is part of an ambitious European Joint Doctorate (EJD) training program on molecular catalysis funded by the European Commission through the Marie Sklowdoska-Curie Action (MSCA), entitled "Coordination Chemistry Inspires Molecular Catalysis" (CCIMC). This programme involves 15 joint PhD projects. You are encouraged to consider all these projects to be consulted on the ITN-EJD website www.ccimc.eu.
Responsibilities and tasks
You will be involved in all facets of the research towards developing new catalysts with metal nanoparticles confined inside functionalized polymeric cores with targeted applications for formation of added-value and bio-sourced products by biphasic catalysis. In cooperation with your supervisors and their research groups, your responsibilities and learning objectives will include, e.g.:
- Rationally designing, synthesizing, and in-depth characterizing ligand-functionalized monomers and polymers, metal nanoparticles and biphasic catalyst systems.
- Catalytic performance testing and parameter optimization of the developed catalyst systems in batch and continuous-flow reactions.
- Planning and following up on your research projects.
- Compiling and storing your scientific data in accordance with the FAIR Data principles.
- Participating in mandatory EJD doctoral training program activities.
- Composing scientific manuscripts for publication.
- Planning and taking part of active public outreach.
- Daily mentoring of assigned student(s) of the supervisors groups.
- Provide teaching.
The EJD training programme involves mandatory participation in a core course, tutorials and an international school plus network meetings, international workshops and an international conference, where the candidate will present the research work. Travelling activities according to a pre-scheduled program is therefore required during the project.
The successful candidate should hold a Master’s degree in chemistry (120 ECTS points), or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree, with focus on synthetic inorganic chemistry and/or organometallic catalysis.
Experience working with polymers, metal nanoparticles, air sensitive organometallic complexes, pressurized reactors as well as spectroscopy (e.g. NMR, FT-IR, X-ray techniques), microscopy (e.g. TEM/SEM) and chromatography analysis (e.g. GC, HPLC, LC-MS) is an advantage.
The successful candidate should be hard working and highly motivated towards developing new research, eager to seek and share knowledge, able to work independently in a dynamic and international environment, and highly confident in both written and spoken English.
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
The successful candidate must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule to be eligible for the PhD scholarship. This implies no more than 12 months of work and/or residence in Denmark within the last 3 years.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and guidelines of the European Commission. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
