OFFER DESCRIPTION

The PRIN “Divination and Greek History (Archaic to Classical). Reassessing Greek Oracular Responses” reconsider Delphic oracles transmitted by ancient literature that seem to be crucial for historical knowledge. Not only the 'authenticity' of these responses must be evaluated, but , should some of them be post-eventum, also their genesis and the reconstruction of the past they imply must be clarified.
The Perugia unit will deal in particular with the oracles on city foundations and colonial history. The project involves the study of the oracles and the oracular narratives and the construction of a database that will collect, inter alia, the numerous relevant ancient sources with critical apparatus, translations and indication of the folkloric motifs recognizable in the responses or narratives. The research activities embrace therefore the fields of archaic and classical Greek history, ancient literature, classical philology, and digital humanities.
